DETROIT, Mich. (10/10/15) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team scored two first-half goals and blanked the University of Illinois-Chicago in a 2-0 shutout on a sunny Saturday afternoon from Titan Field.
The game was Detroit's annual Pink Game, where the team wears specialized uniforms to raise awareness and support those affected by breast cancer.
The match was all Titans from the start, with junior
Anna Mindling scoring on a cross from senior
Tatum Zurawski in the 13
th minute of action. Sophomore
Suzie Redick subbed on and scored her first goal of the season just before halftime, to put Detroit up 2-0 on the visitors.
The back line played a strong game in front of freshman keeper
Claudia Eustaquio, limiting the Flames to six total shots, none of which came on goal.
With the win, Detroit improves to 6-6-2 overall and 2-2-1 in Horizon League play. Meanwhile, UIC falls to 3-10-1 overall and 0-4 in conference action.
How it Happened• Detroit wasted little time putting on the offensive pressure, earning two corners in the first five minutes.
• In the 13
th minute, Zurawski made a slick move at midfield and broke free down the left side before swinging in a cross to the box. Mindling came flying in from the middle and scored on a sliding left-footed blast to give Detroit the game's first goal and a 1-0 lead.
• The Titans kept the pressure on the Flames, scoring the game's second goal to take a 2-0 lead as Redick forced a turnover, took one touch and buried a left-footed shot from the left side of the box and into the upper-left corner of the net in the 41
st minute.
• Detroit's defensive line was dominant in the match, limiting the Flames to six total shots, none of which came on goal.
