Titans Fight in Loss to BonniesBrianne Cohen scored 19 points and
Rosanna Reynolds and
Haleigh Ristovski each recorded double-doubles, but Detroit fell 84-73 on the road at St. Bonaventure on Tuesday. Reynolds tied Cohen with 19 points and set a new career mark with 13 rebounds.
Haleigh Ristovski had 10 points and 11 rebounds for Detroit.
Detroit trailed 26-12 after the first quarter, but out-scored the Bonnies the rest of the way. The Titans cut the deficit to eight points three different times during the middle of the fourth quarter, but would get no closer as St. Bonaventure was able to pull out the win on its home court.
Nicole Urbanick added nine points for Detroit. Freshman
Taylor Malone scored five points -- her first collegiate points -- and junior
Lizzy Connors also added five points for Detroit off the bench. The point total was a season-high for the Titans. The 18 free throws made and 26 attempts were also season-highs for Detroit. The Titans also made just six turnovers and two in the second half, which were season lows.
Reynolds and Ristovski became the first Titan pair to each record double-doubles in a game since the same two did it against Eastern Michigan on Dec. 30, 2014.
Cohen's Career GameSophomore forward
Brianne Cohen set a career-high in points with 19 against the Bonnies on Tuesday. Cohen was 7-of-10 from the line and finished with six field goal makes from the field. Her previous career-best in points was 15, which came in her freshman season at Valparaiso. The point total was the most by a Titan non-starter since
Tayelor McCalister poured in a team-high 24 points against Green Bay on Feb. 1, 2014.
Cohen also finished with a season-high eight rebounds -- six on the offensive end. Fourteen (14) of Cohen's 19 rebounds this season have been of the offensive variety. She entered the game with eight points total in three games and doubled that total and then some with her scouring output at St. Bonaventure.
All-Time SeriesDetroit and Niagara have met just one other time previously, with the game coming last year on Nov. 29, 2014. Niagara earned a 71-49 victory over Detroit in a game played in New York.
Rosanna Reynolds and
Nicole Urbanick each hit three triples and finished with 10 and nine points, respectively, for UDM.
Scouting NiagaraThe Purple Eagles are coming off a thrilling, 73-72 overtime victory over Horizon League foe Cleveland State. Niagara scored 12 points in overtime and took the lead for good with 4:03 left in overtime on a bucket by Taylor McKay. NU led by as many as five points in overtime for its first win of the season. McKay tallied six points of her 16 points in the extra session for Niagara, while Sam Lapszynski recorded game-high totals of 24 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks for NU.
Victoria Rampado leads the squad in scoring at 13.3 points per game, but didn't play Niagara's last game vs. Cleveland State. Kaylee Stroemple is second on the squad at 11.8 points per game and leads NU in assists (16) and is tied for the team lead in rebounds (24). As a team, Niagara is shooting 38.3 percent from the floor and 22.2 percent (14-for-63) from beyond the arc. The Purple Eagles have dropped two other games against Horizon League opponents -- falling to Youngstown State and Oakland prior to their win over Cleveland State.
Rosie Nears 1,000Redshirt-junior guard
Rosanna Reynolds is nearing the 1,000-point plateau. She leads the Titans with 71 points this season and is 171 points away from the 1,000-point milestone for her Titan career. Reynolds surpassed the 800-point plateau mark during the Titans' game against Maryland.
She would become the 20th player in Detroit women's basketball history to surpass the mark and first since Senee Shearer during the 2013-14 season. Reynolds has led the Titans in scoring in all four games this year.
Ristovski, Reynolds Among Horizon League LeadersJuniors
Rosanna Reynolds and
Haleigh Ristovski are among the Horizon League individual leaders early on in the season. Reynolds ranks fifth in the league in scoring at 17.8 points per game. She has reached 19 points twice this season and has led Detroit in scoring in every single game this year.
Ristovski is tied for third in the league at 9.8 rebounds per game. She is first in the conference with 8.8 defensive rebounds per game. Ristovski is also tied for fourth in three-pointers made per game (2.5) and leads the league in minutes played per contest (39.0).
Three's CompanyThe Titans had four players reach 40 or more 3-pointers made during the 2014-15 season. Three of those players are back this year -- Reynolds (59 triples), Ristovski (51) and Urbanick (40). The trio combined for 150 of the 221 triples Detroit made a season ago.
Ristovski (10), Urbanick (eight triples) and Reynolds (eight) have already combined for 26 three-pointers through four games this season. Reynolds ranks 14th all-time in triples and has 94 makes from downtown in her Titan career. Ristovski is 16th all-time with 82 triples.
As a team, Detroit ranks fourth in the conference in 3-pointers made per game (8.0). The Titans trail Oakland (11.0), Green Bay (9.0) and Cleveland State (8.3) and have sank 32 triples in four games this season.
Block PartyDetroit ranks third in the HL with 4.0 blocks per game, following Friday's games. UDM has 16 blocks in four games so far, trailing just UIC (5.4) and Oakland (4.3) in shots blocked per game.
Rosanna Reynolds tallied three blocks in each of the first two games, while
Haleigh Ristovski has posted at least one block in every game this year. She had two blocks at Maryland.
Taking Care of the BallDetroit has shown great improvement in taking care of the ball so far in the 2015-16 season. After committing 18 turnovers in the season opener vs. Bradley, Detroit has allowed fewer and fewer in every game since.
Detroit committed 14 turnovers and just six in the second half against a Top-10 team in Maryland and then followed it up with just six turnovers -- including two in the second half -- against St. Bonaventure.
Reynolds Selected Preseason First Team All-LeagueJunior guard
Rosanna Reynolds was picked to the Preseason All-Horizon League First Team and was one of three juniors named to the First Team. Reynolds, who was a Second Team All-Horizon League honoree last year as a sophomore, led the Titans with 15.7 points and 3.4 assists per game last year. She was second in the Horizon League in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.4) and fourth in three-pointers per game (2.0) and three-point percentage (37.8).
Titans Picked to Finish SeventhDetroit was picked to finish seventh as the 2015-16 Horizon League preseason poll was released by the league office on Nov. 4. In the preseason poll, Detroit earned 157 points overall and finished just five votes out of fifth place. Fifth-place Oakland (162 points) and Cleveland State (161 points), who received one first-place vote, placed just in front of the Titans.
Reigning league champion Green Bay was picked to finish first in the conference and received 25 of the 31 first-place votes. Wright State received four first-place votes and was selected to place second. UIC, Youngstown State and the Golden Grizzlies rounded out the top five.
Up NextThe Titans return to the hardwood on Wednesday, Dec. 2 for a 7 p.m. contest against Cincinnati at Calihan Hall. Detroit has its next three games at home following its contest against Niagara, hosting the Bearcats, Salem International (Dec. 5) and IPFW (Dec. 9) in non-conference affairs.
