DETROIT (12/11/2015) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball program and head coach
Bernard Scott has announced the addition of three new women's basketball student-athletes. All three signed their NLI during the early-signing period in November.
Guard Anja Marinkovic (Toronto, Ont. / Northern Secondary), forward Ashley Miller (Toledo, Ohio / Jesup W. Scott) and guard/forward Zoey Oatis (Detroit, Mich. / Cass Tech) are all set to join the Titans for the 2016-17 season.
"We are adding a great group of young ladies to our Titan family," Scott said of his recruiting class. "They are not only good basketball players, but they are also good students. The coaching staff did a great job of bringing in the right players for our program."
Anja Marinkovic | Guard
Toronto, Ont. (Northern Secondary School)
Bio: Played four years for Northern Secondary School in Toronto ... Won three city championships (2012-14) with the Red Knights, while posting a pair of 35-point games so far in her senior season ... Member of HooptownGTA's 20 points club - Elite 8 and the Fab 48 for 2014-15 ... Has played for the Serbian National Team, scoring the most points in a single game (26 points) at the 2014 U16 FIBA European Championship ... Led the U16 Serbia team in scoring in 2014 ... Also ranked No. 1 in 3-point field goals in a single game and fourth in total 3-point field goals at the 2014 U16 FIBA European Championship ... A member of the 2015 U18 Serbian National Team ... Played club basketball with the North Toronto Huskies, helping lead team to the second-best record in the league at 25-5.
Coach Scott on Marinkovic: "Anja is a high-level guard that will help us immediately. She has the ability to play the point or shooting guard position. She has a great feel for the game and a high basketball IQ. Last summer, she played for the Serbian National Team and I believe that experience will enable her to be a major factor when she plays for us next year. Anja was a major sign for our program."
Ashley Miller | Forward
Toledo, Ohio (Jesup W. Scott High School)
Bio: Lettered four years in basketball and track and field and three in cross country between Rogers High School and Jesup W. Scott High School in Toledo ... Part of three city championships in basketball while at Rogers ... Also helped Rogers to a state semifinals appearance as a sophomore and a runner-up finish in the state finals as a junior ... Won two high jump city titles in track and field and, as a junior, reached the state finals after winning city and district titles in the long jump ... Part of the National Honors Society and the Teen Outreach program ... Her uncle, Brian Billops, played football at Central Michigan, where he is in the Hall of Fame, and cousin Keith Towbridge plays football at Louisville ... Has one uncle who attended UDM.
Coach Scott on Miller: "Ashley is a 6-1 athletic forward that runs the floor hard and can finish at the rim. She plays with a lot of energy and passion. She is also a very good defender and is capable of guarding three positions. Ashley has a great motor and will add to what we are trying to do both offensively and defensively. The best thing about Ashley is that she's a great person and teammate."
Zoey Oatis | Guard/Forward
Detroit, Mich. (Cass Tech High School)
Bio: Three-year letterwinner for the Technicians ... Helped the team to two city championship runner-up finishes in 2013-14 and 2014-15 ... Named All-City Honorable Mention in 2013-14 and 2014-15 ... Named the Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week in February 2015 ... Selected Most Improved Player and led Cass Tech in rebounds as a junior in 2014-15 ... Part of the National Honor Society and DECA ... Season highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds as a sophomore and 16 points and 12 rebounds as a junior ... Played with the Michigan Storm club team for one year, helping the squad to runner-up at the Georgia Peach State Tournament and at the Battle of the Boro.
Coach Scott on Oatis: "Zoey is a 5-11 long, athletic wing that can really affect the game on the defensive end. She's a player that can get out and run the lanes and finish on the break. She's going to add some athleticism to our wing position. We are happy to be keeping Zoey close to home as she's coming from Cass Tech High School in Detroit."
