KALAMAZOO (12/12/2015) -- Junior
Rosanna Reynolds notched her third double-double of the season and was one of four Titans in double figures, but the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball fell at Western Michigan on Saturday afternoon, 70-66.
Detroit (4-5) had its four-game win streak, the longest for the program since 2012-13, ended in the defeat.
Rosanna Reynolds (Canton, Mich. / Divine Child) had 13 points, 11 rebounds and five assists for the Titans, while sophomore forward
Brianne Cohen (Toronto, Ont. / York Memorial) added 16 points and seven boards off the bench to lead Detroit.
The Titans were clicking on all cylinders in the first half and led by double-digits at halftime, 37-27. Detroit used a 22-8 second quarter advantage to open the lead. Western Michigan led 21-15 just 13 seconds into the second quarter, but the Titans used a 20-4 run in the middle of the stanza, with the last six points coming on back-to-back 3-pointers by freshman
Brittney Jackson (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Nazareth) and sophomore
Nicole Urbanick (Grosse Ile, Mich. / Divine Child). After the run, Detroit led 35-25.
The Titans made 5-of-10 triples in the first half and forced nine WMU turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.
Detroit continued its strong play on both ends and remained in front by 10 points after three quarters, 55-45. The red, white and blue took care of the ball all day, turning the ball over just five times in the first 30 minutes of the contest. Cohen and Reynolds combined for 14 of Detroit's 18 points in the third quarter.
Freshman guard
Brittney Jackson (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Nazareth) hit her third triple of the game early in the fourth quarter as Detroit went up 10 again, 58-48. Reynolds went down hard on the play and had to be helped off the court with an injury. She wouldn't be out of the game long, however, as she returned with 7:02 to go.
WMU cut the Detroit lead to three points, 60-57, with 4:51 left. Several questionable calls went against the Titans in the final minutes of the contest, including a pair of charge calls. Still, Detroit and WMU were tied 64-64 with 1:30 remaining after a
Haleigh Ristovski (Sterling Heights, Mich. / University Liggett) lay-up.
Jackson forced a steal with under one minute to go and Detroit down three points, 67-64, but Jackson missed a 3-pointer on the other end and WMU made all four free throws in the final minute to clinch the victory.
Jackson scored eight of her career-high 11 points in the opening 20 minutes for the Titans. Jackson finished 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. Urbanick sank two 3-pointers and finished with 14 points for Detroit. The Titans shot 37.9 percent for the game and sank 10-of-13 from the free throw line.
Detroit forced Western Michigan into 14 total turnovers and held the edge in turnovers for the contest, 14-10.
Miracle Woods led the Broncos (6-2) with a game-high 27 points.
