KOCHVILLE TWP., Mich. (1/31/2015) -- Three Titans earned individual victories for the University of Detroit Mercy men's track and field squad Saturday at the inaugural Saginaw Valley State University Jet's Pizza Invitational.
The meet on a 300-meter track was individually-based. Team results weren't recorded. Other men's squads in competition were Oakland, Aquinas, Ferris State, Northwood, Alma, Davenport, Marygrove, Macomb CC, Lake Superior and the host Cardinals.
Senior thrower
Colin Cashner broke a fieldhouse record with his victory in the weight throw. Cashner reached 18.49 meters (60' 8") to place first over 24 other competitors.
Sophomore
Khalil Parris won the 400 meter dash for the second straight week. Parris trimmed .72 seconds off his winning time at the IPFW Duals, by winning the 400 meters Saturday in a time of 49.20.
Freshman
Ben Kendell made it 2-for-2 in the 3,000 meter run in the indoor season. He won the event with a PR time of 8:27.68. He won the event over 43 other competitors by more than eight seconds.
Two Titans earned PRs while placing in the top five in the mile run. Freshman
Charlie Felton was third in a PR time of 4:17.35 and junior
Austin Wigent also recorded a PR, by finishing fifth with a time of 4:17.59.
Senior
George Holman placed 10th in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 8:56.12. Classmate
Ylli Alla was 14th in the event with a time of 9:03.82. Senior
Colin Creagh and freshman
Miles Kelleher both competed in the 5,000 meters, earning times of 15:56.48 and 16:01.90, respectively.
Sophomore
Jacob Whitting set a PR during the qualifying for the 60 meter hurdles (8.88). He bettered the time in the finals by crossing in 8.78, which earned him sixth place overall.
Also for Detroit in the 400 meter dash, sophomore
Joe Harmon finished 10th in 51.77, while junior
Colton Wirgau placed 12th in 51.89. Sophomore
Zach Sand made his season debut in the 200 meter dash for the Titans, crossing with a personal-best time of 24.26.
Detroit placed fifth in the 4x400 meter relay as the team of Parris, Harmon, Wirgau and Whitting earned a time of 3:25.27.
The Titans return to the track and field competitively next weekend, competing at the Youngstown State Invitational on Feb. 6-7.
