Bass Scores Career-High in #MetroSeries Loss at Oakland

ROCHESTER, Mich. (2/15/2015) – Freshman sensation Paris Bass scored a career-high 28 points, but it wasn't enough as Metro Series rival Oakland was able to sneak out an 83-78 win over the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team on Sunday at the O'rena in front of a record crowd of 4,101.

Bass finished the game with 28 points on 9-of-14 shooting, while grabbing a team six rebounds and dishing out two assists. Junior Anton Wilson pitched in 11 points, while senior forward Juwan Howard Jr. added nine.

Detroit (12-16, 5-8 HL) led 67-64 with 5:38 left, before the Golden Grizzlies closed the game with a 19-11 run - including five-straight free throws - in the final minute to seal the win.

Oakland (13-14, 8-4 HL) led 46-33 at the half, before the Titans opened the second half with a 32-18 run – including a monster dunk from freshman Jaleel Hogan – to give Detroit a 65-64 lead with seven minutes remaining.

Detroit would then add to its lead off a layup from sophomore Jarod Williams to go up 67-64 with 6:17 left. But the Titans were then called for four-straight fouls, including one offensive to send the Golden Grizzlies to the charity stripe. Oakland was then able to regain the lead 68-67 with four minutes remaining, before a couple of free throws from Howard put Detroit back in front 69-68 with 3:32 left.

An old fashion 3-point play from Kahlil Felder put Oakland up 71-69, before Bass made a pair from the charity stripe to tie the score with 2:55 remaining. Oakland would go up by three 74-71, before Bass made two more free throws to trim the lead to one with 1:34 left on the clock, but that was as close as the score would get as Felder made a pair of baskets – including another 3-point play – to finish the game.

Both teams came out shooting as the score was tied at 21 midway through the first half, before Oakland used a 25-12 run to take a 46-33 lead into the locker room. The Golden Grizzlies largest lead was 16, 39-23, until Bass took over scoring 10-straight points, forcing Oakland to call a timeout.

Felder led Oakland with a game-high 29 points, while Nick Daniels added 14 and Corey Petros pitched in 11.

Detroit shot 48 percent overall (28-of-58) and 79 percent for the charity stripe (15-of-19), while dishing out 17 assists and recording nine steals. Oakland connected on 51 percent of its shots (30-of-58) and made 77 percent (17-of-22) from the free throw line.

Detroit will continue its three-game road trip when the Titans visit Green Bay on Wednesday, Feb. 18. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET at the Resch Center and will be televised nationally on ESPN3.
