DETROIT (2/16/2015) -- It was another highly successful National Girls & Women In Sports Day in Calihan Hall over the weekend as over 100 girls were on hand for the annual event.
"I was so happy with the event and it was great to see all the girls with a smile on their face as they interacted with our student-athletes," said
Megan Callahan '13, the event organizer. "I was fortunate enough to be a part of this event during my Titan career and I always remember how much fun it was to be a part of."
National Girls & Women in Sports Day celebrated 29 years as an annual event, which brings attention to the success of Title IX and the thousands of opportunities it has provided young girls in the United States.
The event was open to all girls ages 6-12 as they were part of a number of exciting games and activities on the day that featured a variety of sports clinics. During each of the sports stations, Titan student-athletes were on hand from a number of Detroit's varsity teams and they helped provide skill instruction and hands-on demonstrations to all the participants.
This year's sports included golf, fencing, soccer, track and field, cheerleading and dancing.
A sports panel was also added this year headed by UDM's Director of Ticket Sales
Wendy Carpio along with Detroit assistant women's basketball coach
Ke'Sha Blanton, former Titan softball player and current graduate student
Shelby Long , Elizabeth Godek, Senior Director, Fan & Member Experience for the Detroit Pistons and Sjonne Mitchell, Sponsorship Services Coordinator for the Detroit Tigers. The panelists were able to describe their athletic achievements growing up and their experience in sports in a question and answer session with the girls.
"The event is all about the opportunities that young girls can have in athletics and to expose them to a variety of sports. Everyone grows up playing basketball and while that was a big part of the day, we showed them a lot of sports and activities that they normally don't see and who knows, maybe someone here will be an All-American fencer or golfer when they didn't even know what those sports were even about" added Callahan.
After the activities, the girls and their parents were treated to an exciting basketball game as the Titans took on Youngstown State. At halftime of that game, all of the girls then took center court to show off a cheerleading routine that they learned in their sessions.
The University of Detroit Mercy would like to thank all the girls and families who came out and would love to see you back at UDM for future events, including next year's National Girls & Women in Sports Day.
