LAST OUTINGThree Titans scored in double-figures, but it wasn't enough as Valparaiso was able to make free throws down the stretch to hold on to a 78-70 win over the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team.

Juwan Howard Jr. led Detroit (11-14, 4-6 HL) with 19 points, while freshman sensation
Paris Bass scored 14 and sophomore
Chris Jenkins added 13.

After trailing at halftime 31-25, Detroit was able to take the lead 41-37 with 14:27 left, before Valparaiso (21-4, 8-2 HL) used an 11-0 run to regain the lead, one it would not relinquish, 48-41 with 11 minutes remaining.

Detroit finished shooting 38 percent (22-of-58) overall and 43 percent (10-of-23) from deep, while Valpo made 56 percent (26-of-46) overall and 6-of-15 from downtown. The Crusaders won the battle on the boards 33-32 and made 20-of-31 free attempts.

ABOUT UICCorey Petros scored a career-high 34 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Oakland to a 91-77 win over Illinois-Chicago on Wednesday night. Khalil Felder had 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting, seven assists and five boards and Jalen Hayes had 16 points and 10 assists for Oakland (12-12, 7-2 Horizon). The Golden Grizzlies shot 60 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the 3-point line.

Paris Burns finished with 20 points and nine assists, Ahman Fells had 19 points and eight rebounds and Markese McGuire added 16 points, including 4-of-5 3-point shooting for the Flames (5-19, 1-8).

After pulling ahead by three at the midway mark, Oakland quickly stretched the lead to double digits two minutes into the second, and did not allow the deficit to drop below that, leading by as many as 22.

SERIES WITH THE FLAMESThis will be the 44th meeting between Detroit and UIC, with the Titans leading the all-time series 29-14. Detroit won the first meeting this season, 69-68, after Sophomore
Jarod Williams made free throws with 2.8 second left at the UIC Pavilion.

JACKSON TO RECEIVE CONTI AWARDUDM Department of Athletics has announced that former Titan standout and professional basketball player Jermaine Jackson will receive this year's prestigious John Conti Letterman of Distinction Award.

Jackson will officially receive the honor on Sunday, Feb. 8, during the men's basketball game against UIC. The game will tip at 2:00 p.m., in historic Calihan Hall.

A 2010 Detroit Titan Hall of Fame inductee and two-time All-Horizon League standout, Jackson earned four letters at the University from 1995-99 and is 20th all-time in scoring with 1,341 career points. He is also fifth in school history with 509 assists and ninth tallying 142 steals.

The John Conti Letterman of Distinction Award was established by Anheuser-Busch to honor its long-time employee upon his induction into the Titan Sports Hall of Fame in 1984. Conti was the captain of the 1949 Detroit football team that won the Missouri Valley Conference Championship. At 6-1 and 300 pounds, he was an Honorable Mention All-American and the biggest man in college football. His spirit and charitable enthusiasm have always seemed to be even larger. In tribute to that spirit, the John Conti Letterman of Distinction Award is presented to former Titan varsity athletes who go above and beyond at work and in the community.

PARIS OVER 300UDM freshman sensation
Paris Bass recently became the 15th Titan to score 300 points during his rookie campaign. Bass enters Sunday's game with 306 points, which is just five points behind the Titans all-time leading scorer Rashad Phillips '01, who scored 311 during his freshman season.

The last Titan freshman to score 300 or more points during his rookie season was
Ray McCallum, who finished with 446 points in 2010.

FORMER CUB GROWING UPFormer U of D Jesuit High School star
Chris Jenkins is beginning to make his mark as part of the UDM men's basketball team. The sophomore guard/forward recorded his first collegiate double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds against Northeastern.

Through his first 14 games as a Titan, the former Cub is averaging 7.7 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.
HOWARD IS 21st OVERALLThis season, Detroit senior forward
Juwan Howard Jr. became the 39th Titan to join the 1,000-point club and is currently 21st all-time on the list with 1,277 points. Former Titan Jermaine Jackson '99, who will be honored during Sunday's game with the John Conti Award, sits at number 20 on the list with 1,341 points.

UAW FORD NIGHT ON ESPNUUDM men's basketball team will play in front of a national television audience on ESPNU when the Titans host Horizon League foe Cleveland State on Friday, Feb. 13.

The game will tip-off at 8 p.m. ET and will also be available on WatchESPN.com and the WatchESPN app on mobile devices.

This will mark the third time this season that the Titans will appear on ESPNU and the 20th game of the season on the ESPN Family of Networks.
