INDIANAPOLIS (3/2/2015) – University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball freshman
Paris Bass was chosen as the Horizon League Freshman of the Year after a stellar rookie campaign, while senior
Juwan Howard Jr. was named to the All-League second team in voting of the League's coaches, sports information directors and media.
Bass, who is the first Titan to earn Freshman of the Year accolades since
Ray McCallum in 2010, closed the regular season leading all freshmen in scoring at 12.5 points per game, rebounding at 5.8 per contest and blocked shots at 1.0 per game. He tied for the most steals by a rookie, while his 46.2 percent field goal shooting was second-best of any freshman in the conference.
Bass was also named the Horizon League Freshman of the Week on four occasions and recorded four double-doubles in the regular season. He became the 15th Titan to score 300 or more points during his rookie campaign and enters Tuesday's game with 389 points, which is 78 more than the Titans all-time leading scorer Rashad Phillips '01, who scored 311 during his freshman season.
Howard, earns second team honors for the second-straight season, and ranks second in the conference in scoring at 17.8 points per game. The senior captain has recorded 13 20-point games this season and enters Tuesday's first-round game with 1,381 points in his career; which ranks 19th all-time at Detroit.
Detroit will begin the 2015 Horizon League Championship on Tuesday, March 3 when the No. 5 seeded Titans host No. 8 Youngstown State at historic Calihan Hall. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET and will be live on ESPN3 with Matt Dery and Earl Cureton making the call.
