DETROIT (3/3/2015) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer program and head coach
Nicholas Deren '99 have announced the addition of two transfers for the upcoming 2015 season.
Austin Dunn and
Vincent Umejiego are enrolled at UDM and have joined the men's soccer program for winter practices.
Dunn, a 6-foot-0 defender, spent the last three seasons at Olivet College, where he was a three-year starter and a captain for the Comets. Dunn started all 20 games for Olivet during the 2014 season, collecting two goals and two assists as he was named to the All-MIAA Second Team. The Perry, Mich. native is a two-time Capital One Academic All-District honoree and started 51 career games for the Comets, scoring four goals and four assists and tallying 43 shots.
"Austin brings us experience and a presence on the back line," Deren said. "He's one of the hardest tackling defenders I've seen and that physicality will be a key to our success this year."
A 5-foot-11 forward, Umejiego played one season for nearby Marygrove College, scoring three goals and adding an assist in 14 starts and 18 games total for the Mustangs last year. He ranked third on Marygrove with 27 shots and 13 shots on goal during the 2014 season. A native of Lagos, Nigeria, Umejiego will be a junior in 2015 with two full years of eligibility left.
"Vince just adds a tricky dynamic winger to the mix," Deren commented. "He should give us depth at that position and once he gets used to our style of play, I see him making an impact on the team."
Detroit is coming off a 9-7-4 campaign in which the Titans earned a share of the 2014 Horizon League regular-season crown. The Titans allowed the fewest goals per game in program history (19 goals in 20 games) and won the UNLV Nike Invitational Tournament in Las Vegas during the season. Eight of the 11 starters return for Detroit next season, including Horizon League Goalkeeper and Defensive Player of the Year
Nathan Steinwascher as well as Horizon League Freshman of the Year
Spiro Pliakos.
