Six Titans Named to Horizon League Winter All-Academic Teams

Horizon League Release  |  2014-15 Winter All-Academic Teams

INDIANAPOLIS (4/13/2015) --
Six University of Detroit Mercy student-athletes were selected to the 2014-15 Horizon League Winter All-Academic Teams, which was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.

A total of 72 student-athletes at the nine league schools were honored in balloting by the Horizon League's faculty athletics representatives, as well as the league's sports information directors. Six sports were honored during the winter, including men's and women's basketball, men's and women's swimming and diving and men's and women's indoor track and field.

Women's basketball had two of the five honorees as sophomores Rosanna Reynolds (Canton, Mich. / Divine Child) and Haleigh Ristovski (Sterling Heights, Mich. / University Liggett) both received recognition

Three women's track student-athletes earned the honor as graduate students Louisa Coppola (Warren, Mich. / Warren Woods Tower) and Shannon Marchant (London, Ont. / St. Thomas Aquinas) along with senior Sara Taylor (Emmett, Mich. / Yale) were all voted onto the team, while sophomore Ryan Leahy (St. Joseph, Mich. / St. Joseph) from the men's track and field squad was also honored.

Reynolds was Second Team All-Horizon League this past season after leading the Titans in scoring at 15.7 points per game. The business major with a 3.76 GPA started all 30 games and had a team-leading 59 three-pointers, while sinking 37.8 percent of her triple attempts. Reynolds was 18th in the country -- and second in the HL -- in assist-to-turnover ratio as she posted 101 assists and 42 turnovers for a 2.40 average.

Ristovski sports a perfect 4.00 GPA in business. She started all 30 contests for the Titans this season and led the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.51, which also ranked 11th in the nation. Ristovski led Detroit in rebounding at 7.1 rebounds per game and in blocks with 25, while ranking fourth on the squad with 9.4 points per game.

Coppola won two Horizon League indoor track and field titles last month and holds a 3.88 GPA in English Literature. She won six races total during the indoor season and helped the Titans to a fourth-place finish at the Horizon League Indoor Championships.

Marchant, who has a 3.82 GPA in psychology, placed in the top four three different times in the 800-meter run during the indoor season. She was named the Horizon League Women's Runner of the Week after the IPFW Duals, where she was victorious in the 800m, and anchored the 4x400 meter relay team to a triumph.

Taylor was part of the conference champion distance medley relay (DMR) for the second-straight season at the Horizon League Indoor Championships. The nursing major with a 3.85 GPA ran the first leg of the DMR and also placed 12th in the mile at the indoor championships.

Leahy -- the January Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Month for the Horizon League -- earned the accolade after a strong indoor season that featured two, top-five finishes at the Horizon League Indoor Championships in the 3,000 and 5,000-meters. Leahy, who holds a 3.95 GPA in pre-med, won three races during the indoor season and was named the Horizon League Men's Runner of the Week on Jan. 13.

The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal Academic All-League Teams in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Academic All-Horizon League consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale) and have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits.
