Louisa Coppola (Warren, Mich. / Warren Woods Tower) has been named the Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Month for February, it was announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Coppola is the second Detroit track and field student-athlete to earn the honor this season after sophomore Ryan Leahy was named the Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Month in January.
The graduate student with a 3.88 GPA won two Horizon League Indoor titles in February and helped the Titans to a fourth-place finish at the indoor championships. Coppola repeated as a champion in the mile run with a time of 4:55.42 and anchored the HL champion Distance Medley Relay (DMR) that also won for the second straight year.
She was named to the Horizon League Winter All-Academic Women's Track & Field Team following the indoor season.
Coppola is competing in her final track and field season this spring for the Titans. She finished the indoor season with five victories and had the top time in the mile run as well as the second-best league time in the 3,000 meters. Coppola also currently has the second and third-best times in the 1,500 and 5,000 meters, respectively, in the Horizon League for the outdoor season.
Coppola is a decorated student-athlete at Detroit and was named UDM's Titan Club Award winner on the women's side for the 2013-14 academic year after helping lead the Titans to runner-up finishes at the 2014 Horizon League Indoor and Outdoor Championships. Coppola was named the Most Outstanding Perfomer for Women's Track & Field at the Indoor Championships after securing two titles last year and finishing runner-up in another event. At the Outdoor Championships finishes she won another title in the 1,500 meter run and was runner-up in the 5,000 meter run.
She is a two-time Team MVP for cross country and has been named to the UDM Athletic Director's Honor Roll for each semester at Detroit.
