DETROIT (7/16/2015) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer program and head coach
Mike Lupenec have announced the addition of 10 incoming student-athletes for the upcoming 2015 season.
The class is diverse and includes players that play over the field, including two goalkeepers. Seven of the incoming freshmen are from Michigan, while three student-athletes are from across the border in Canada -- two from Ontario and the other from Quebec.
The 2015 class for the Titans are
Claudia Eustaquio (Mississauga, Ont. / Philip Pocock Catholic),
Carly Fiorido (Windsor, Ont. / Holy Names),
Elizabeth Gonser (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Catholic Central),
Susu Hashwi (Dearborn Heights, Mich. / Crestwood),
Sarah Hirschmann (Warren, Mich. / Regina),
Molly Kane (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Catholic Central),
Lexi Lubonja (Livonia, Mich. / Churchill),
Kelsey Mendez (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage),
Chloe Ricciardi (Kirkland, Que. / John Rennie) and
Aubree Snow (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage).
It may be the biggest class in Detroit women's soccer history.
"We needed to address a few positions for the girls that left," said Lupenec, who is entering his 23rd year as head coach. "I think it's going to take us awhile. We are going to have a very young team this year, but I think athletically we are stronger than we were last year. We are a little more deeper with this class and I think it's going to be competitive from the forward line all the way to the goalkeeper."
All 10 are set to join the Titans in the beginning of August as the Titans prepare for the 2015 season. Here's a look at each individual player:
Claudia Eustaquio | Goalkeeper
Mississauga, Ont. / Philip Pocock Catholic
High School: Graduated from Philip Pocock Catholic Secondary School in 2015 ... Lettered all four years for the Pirates under coach Adriana Finelli ... Also lettered for four years in volleyball and played three years of varsity basketball ... Won a ROPSAA Tier II championship in soccer in 2012 ... Named Team MVP during sophomore season ... A three-time Athlete of the Year (2012, 2014-15) ... Graduated with honors ... Helped basketball squad to a 26-3 season in 2013 ... Played club soccer for Dixie Athletics 97 Girls Ontario Youth Soccer League (OYSL) for three years ... Club team finished first in East Division in 2014, No. 2 overall in OYSL.
Coach Lupenec on Eustaquio: "She's one of the best goaltenders in Canada, in my opinion. We are fortunate enough to have her. She's got great height, good hands, great foot skills and communicates very well. She's like every freshman coming in, they got good enough technical skills, but tactically the game is a lot faster, so she has to get adapted, but I see her competing for the No. 1 spot right away."

Carly Fiorido | Defender
Windsor, Ont. / Holy Names
High School: A 2015 graduate of Holy Names High School ... Lettered all four years for the Knights and coach Mark Leonardi ... Also ran cross country ... Selected team captain as senior and made the All-Star team ... Helped the team to a WECSSAA City Championship, SWOSSAA Championship and to an OFSAA Quarterfinals appearance as a sophomore ... Scored two goals in the OFSAA Quarterfinal game ... Played club soccer for Eastside Kickers for five seasons ... Helped club squad to Ontario Cup Silver Medal, second place in the Ontario Youth Soccer League and Silver Medal at Ontario Summer Games.
Coach Lupenec on Fiorido: "She played in one of the better soccer clubs in Windsor in the Eastside Kickers. She's a center back, very good in the air, and a very powerful-type kid. Very good on the ball. I see her stepping in right away and possibly starting and giving us valuable minutes in helping replace
Haley Burtraw. She's going to have to get adapted to the speed and the tactical game, but I think as a freshman, she's definitely someone who is going to be a stable starter in the back line."

Elizabeth Gonser | Midfield
Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Catholic Central
High School: A 2015 graduate of Grand Rapids Catholic Central ... Lettered all four years for the Cougars and Genevieve Sandner ... Also played two years of basketball ... Two-time All-State honoree, including Second Team as a senior ... Two-time All-Region, All-Conference and three-time All-District ... As sophomore, helped squad to first state semifinal appearance in school history ... Played for Michigan Rovers FC for four years, reaching state cup quarterfinals with squad ... Other clubs played for include Alliance and West Michigan Fire Juniors.
Coach Lupenec on Gonser: "I see her as an outside back. She is very athletic and an aggressive kid. She's got a great work ethic, great attitude and was coached by a UDM alum who played here in Genevieve Sandner so she'll be used to our coaching style. I think in the long run, she'll have a big impact as a wide player in the back or as a forward."

Susu Hashwi | Defender
Dearborn Heights, Mich. / Crestwood
High School: A 2015 graduate of Crestwood High School ... Letter all four years for the Chargers and coach Mike Haidar ... Also lettered in cross country and track and field ... Named Team MVP and Most Improved Player in soccer ... Played eight years of club soccer for the Dearborn Soccer Club and was a team captain.
Coach Lupenec on Hashwi: "Susu is a very athletic girl. She's someone who is going to have to get adapted to the Division I program right away. But she's super athletic, a hard worker, and I see her possibly starting as a defender or a wide player for us."

Sarah Hirschmann | Goalkeeper
Warren, Mich. / Regina
High School: A 2015 graduate of Regina High School ... Lettered three seasons for the Saddle Shoes and coach Ryan Elchuk ... Played two years of lacrosse and two years of hockey ... Three-time All-State honoree, including First Team selection as junior and senior ... All-Academic in both soccer and hockey ... Named All-State Honorable Mention in hockey as a senior ... Selected Student Council President and was part of the National Honor Society ... Played four years of club soccer for Vardar.
Coach Lupenec on Hirschmann: "Sarah is a very athletic goaltender. She's very good with her feet, very aggressive, and a good shot stopper. She's going to have to adapt to the Division I strength and height of players, but she played at a high level with the Vardar soccer club, which gave her experience to be ready right away. She just adds another good goaltender to our program. It adds more competition, because she is definitely someone who can step right in right away."

Molly Kane | Midfield
Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Catholic Central
High School: A 2015 graduate from Grand Rapids Catholic Central ... Lettered four years for the Cougars and coach Genevieve Sandner ... Also lettered in volleyball and competitive cheer ... Four-time All-State honoree, including Second Team as junior and senior ... Four-time All-Conference, four-time All-District and three-time All-Region ... As a sophomore she scored the game-winning goal in school's first regional championship in school history as the squad reached the state semifinals ... Recorded 32 goals, 18 assists for 50 points through her junior season ... Played club soccer for Kentwood Falcons (seven years) and Grand Rapids Crew (three years) ... Reached State Cup finals in 2014 with GR Crew.
Coach Lupenec on Kane: "
Molly Kane is going to add a little bit more to our midfield. She sees the field very well and has a tremendous shot. She's very strong and technically very good. I see her coming in and possibly starting as an offensive midfielder."

Alexis Lubonja | Forward
Livonia, Mich. / Churchill
High School: A 2015 graduate of Churchill High School ... Lettered three years for the Chargers and coach Reid Friedrichs ... Named All-Conference and All-Division as a junior ... Earned Scholar Athlete Award in 2013-14 ... Part of Student Council, PTSA, Staff Appreciation and Community Service groups ... Scored 16 goals, while adding nine assists through her junior season ... Played club soccer for the Michigan Hawks U18 capturing a 2015 State Cup Championship and Rush Kickoff Classic Championship.
Coach Lupenec on Lubonja: "She's your typical center forward. For her club team, they played a 4-4-2, so she's basically someone down the road or possibly next year she will start for us. She's the type of player that will hold the ball for us, an
Abby McCollum type of player. She's not extremely fast, but very good around the goal and very good technically. I think if she gets adapted to the speed at the Division I level, she can help us."

Kelsey Mendez | Midfield
Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage
High School: A 2015 graduate of Heritage High School ... Lettered all four years for the Hawks and coach Michelle Noble ... Also lettered one year in swimming and diving ... Played club soccer for Saginaw Quest (three years), Midland Fusion (three years) and Saginaw Sparks (one year) ... Won three straight tournament titles as part of Fusion club team.
Coach Lupenec on Mendez: "
Kelsey Mendez is very athletic, very aggressive, goal-scoring type player. I see her being a wide player, create a lot of havoc for defenders just because of her speed and tenacity. When tactically she figures out the game a little bit, I think she'll be one of the most dangerous forwards in the league."

Chloe Ricciardi | Defender
Kirkland, Que. / John Rennie (John Abbott College)
Prior to Detroit: Graduated from John Rennie High School in 2012 ... Lettered in soccer and was team captain ... A Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) All-Canadian for John Abbott College in 2014 ... Named Top Player in Quebec in 2014 ... Earned Top Rookie and Team MVP honors ... A two-time League All-Star ... Played club soccer for Lakeshore for past seven years.
Coach Lupenec on Ricciardi: "We were fortunate enough to get Chloe late in the recruiting process out of Montreal. Very good in the air. I think what we lost in what
Alyssa Riley gave us, I think Chloe can give us also. Chloe can play various positions, what I think her strength is as a center back. She sees the field well, is very aggressive, very good technically, but I could also see her being a defensive midfielder who can play through the midfield because she's good offensively and defensively. She gives us a little more flexibility with the center backs that we have in our program right away. I think you'll see Chloe being one of the better defenders in the conference."

Aubree Snow | Midfield
Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage
High School: A 2015 graduate of Heritage High School ... Transferred from Nouvel Catholic Central to Heritage after freshman year ... Lettered all four years in soccer, the last three for the Hawks and coach Michelle Noble ... Also lettered in basketball for three years at Heritage ... A member of the 2015 Saginaw News Girls Soccer Dream Team ... Three-time All-Conference in soccer, helping squad to district title game as a junior ... Helped lead Hawks to 22-4 record and Class A state semifinals in basketball, earning First Team All-Conference honors ... Played five years of club soccer for Midland Fusion '97.
Coach Lupenec on Snow: "She's a left-footed player, very aggressive. Technically, she's very good. She played forward for her club team. She gives us a little flexibility on the back line where we could possibly use her as a left back, getting forward as a winger or as a wide forward. With her and Kelsey, what I saw was that they are very aggressive and not afraid to mix it up with anybody which is good in regards to the Divison I game. I see them only getting better by playing every day and being in this environment. Aubree is going to have an impact just as much as Kelsey because they are super athletic kids that are aggressive."
The Titans are coming off a 2014 season that saw the team finish runner-up in both the Horizon League regular season standings and the Horizon League Championships. Detroit went 9-9-1, winning five overtime games and finishing 5-3 in the league. The Titans also earned two victories -- both in overtime -- over Metro Series rival Oakland, including a 1-0 victory in OT in the Horizon League Championship semifinals to reach their first HL Championship since 2006.
