Coach Scott Announces Fleming, Blanton As Assistant Coaches

DETROIT (6/1/2015) -- University of Detroit Mercy head women's basketball coach Bernard Scott has announced a few changes on the women's basketball staff starting with the addition of a new assistant coach in Tara Fleming

Coach Scott also announced that assistant coach Ke'Sha Blanton will stay on staff along with graduate assistant coaches Shareese McBrayer and AJ Burton. Burton will now carry the title of video coordinator.

Fleming is no stranger to the Jesuit academic background as well as the Horizon League playing at Youngstown State and coaching at Canisius. She spent the last nine seasons on the sidelines for the Golden Griffins, helping the program to seven MAAC Championship quarterfinals appearances and a run to the title game.

She was the second-longest tenured assistant coach in the MAAC and served as the program's recruiting coordinator, while working with the development of the post players. She also helped run the day-to-day operations of the women's basketball program.

"Tara was a big sign for us here at Detroit," stated Scott. "She is a veteran in the collegiate coaching field and has worked for coach Terry Zeh at Canisius, who has prepared her tremendously. She is a good recruiter who has recruited overseas and Canada and is a very good post coach who will help our players immediately."

During her nine seasons, Canisius set the school's Division I record for wins with 24 in 2008-09, advancing to the MAAC Championship game and earning a bid to the WNIT. She also helped the Golden Griffins capture 20 MAAC athletic honors and accolades and 39 Academic All-League selections.

"I am thrilled to be a part of the Titan family," said Fleming. "I look forward to amazing new experiences and the opportunity to be a part of the great success that I know we will have here. I couldn't have asked to work for a better person then coach Scott, and look forward to learning from him and growing with him here at UDM."

Prior to her stop in upstate New York, she was a student assistant at her alma mater, Youngstown State, during the 2005-06 season. At YSU, she coordinated film exchange, assisted with team travel, meal arrangements, and opponent scouting as well as organizing recruiting mailings.

Fleming played in 107 career games for the Penguins from 2001-05 and ended her career ranked second all-time in school history with 125 blocked shots.

Blanton just ended her third season as an assistant coach for the Titans and recently served as the program's interim head coach. She was on the staff in 2013 when Detroit won the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI), and helped the team win six more games and claim a share of fifth place in the regular season last year, after being picked to finish last in the preseason poll.

"Keeping Ke'Sha was a no-brainer. She has a very good relationship with the players we have returning. I have known her for quite awhile now and she has a bunch of Michigan contacts. She is also the type of person I want representing our program," added Scott.

She came to UDM after serving as a graduate assistant coach at Florida State, where her responsibilities included assisting coaches in practice, recruiting, player development, scouting, community relations and extensive film breakdown of opponent's players, plays, and defenses.

"I am happy to be staying at Detroit, a place that I love and have called home for the last few years," said Blanton. "I have known coach Scott for a long time and he is a great coach. His vision for this program is outstanding and something that I am happy to be a part of."

During her time with FSU, she helped the program to 38 wins, including a 24-8 campaign in 2010-2011, when the Seminoles earned a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the second round. Florida State players also earned six ACC honors, while Cierra Bravard was named Honorable Mention All-American and Natasha Howard a Freshman All-American in 2011.

McBrayer and Burton both joined the program last year. McBrayer assisted with team travel, meal arrangements and daily practice schedules and workouts, while Burton assisted with video coordination and player development.
