Howard To Play For Miami Heat NBA Summer League Team

DETROIT (6/28/2015) – Former University of Detroit Mercy standout Juwan Howard Jr. will get his shot to impress NBA coaches and scouts this summer as the Titans forward has signed with the Miami Heat and will play in the NBA Summer League in Orlando.

"This is such a great opportunity for Juwan," said UDM head coach Ray McCallum. "He put in a lot of hard work here at Detroit and I am happy that he will get a chance to compete at a higher level."

The Orlando Magic will host the Southwest Airlines Orlando Pro Summer League at the team's practice court at the Amway Center from July 4-10, 2015. The 25-game, seven-day event will feature two teams from the Orlando Magic, along with the Brooklyn Nets, Charlotte Hornets, Detroit Pistons, Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies, Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder.

Each team will play five games over the seven-day event, with a championship game being played on the final day of the league.

Howard finished his three-year Titans career with 1,404 points which ranks 18th all-time at Detroit.

He averaged 14.6 points and 4.2 rebounds in his three years with the Titans, while shooting 42 percent from the field and 37 percent from downtown. He also recorded 195 assists to go along with 84 steals and 36 blocked shots during his time in the Motor City.

As a sophomore - his first season suiting up for the Titans - he helped Detroit to a 20-13 record - UDM's second-straight 20-win campaign – capped with a trip to the 2013 NIT. He earned the Norm Swanson Top Newcomer award after averaging 7.6 points and 3.2 rebounds per game.

The following season, Howard was the team's Robert Calihan co-Most Valuable Player, and was an All-Horizon League Second Team and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District Second Team performer. He led the Titans in scoring with 18.3 points per game, which ranked fourth in the Horizon League, while also finishing 11th in rebounding (5.3), fourth in free throw percentage (83.9%) and tied for 10th with 1.7 three-point field goals made per game. He also led the Titans with 2.2 assists per game and scored in double figures 28 times - including 14 games with 20 or more points. Howard opened the season with a pair of double-doubles.

As a senior, the team captain was once again named to the All-Horizon League Second Team and the NABC All-District Second Team. He led the Titans in scoring with 17.5 points per game, which ranked second in the Horizon League and also finished third in free throw percentage (85.0%) and fourth with 2.0 three-point field goals made per game, all while leading the Titans with 2.4 assists per game. He scored in double figures 28 times - including 14 games with 20 or more points.

The NBA Summer League – which is in its 11th year of existence - has a rich history of showcasing the NBA's future stars, including the NBA's last two MVP's in Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant. Last year former Titan Ray McCallum stole the show being named MVP after leading the Sacramento Kings past the Houston Rockets in the championship game. McCallum would then go on to start 30 games for the Kings in the regular season while averaging 7.4 points, 2.8 assists and 2.4 rebounds per game.

Due to space limitations, the event is not open to the public and will be open only to the media and professional team/league personnel. Fans can access box scores, game recaps and cumulative statistics by visiting www.orlandomagic.com.
