University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball head coach Bernard Scott was named the 11th head coach in program history on May 5 and had his formal press conference on May 6. In his first 30 days on the job, coach Scott has brought energy and enthusiasm to Calihan Hall and has worked nearly around the clock in building a coaching staff, recruiting, scheduling and maintaining a family life. In this blog, coach Scott personally talks about what his first 30 days on the job have entailed. My first 30 days have been very busy, but also exciting. The day after my press conference, we hosted our first recruit at Detroit. Since that time, we have hosted six other recruits and out of the six, we have received three commitments. It's exciting to have recruits and their families realize that the University of Detroit Mercy is a great place for their future.
A week after being hired, I was able to start individual workouts with some of the returning players that are taking classes in summer term I. During this time, it gave me the opportunity to see their skill level and also start to build the culture that I want in workouts and practices. Workouts and practices will be intense and up-tempo. I would like to play an up-tempo style of basketball so everything we do will prepare us to play that way. I'm very impressed with what I saw from each player during the three weeks we had individual workouts and I am looking forward to having the entire team on campus June 22nd as they prepare for summer term II.
Something that was very important to me once I started this job was building relationships with the academic and support staff on campus. I have had meetings with quite a few people on campus, and they have gone great. The one thing I can say after just 30 days is that our students are very fortunate to have such a strong support system here at Detroit.
If you listened to my press conference or have read any articles about me, you know family is very important to me. When I took this job, I promised my eight-year-old daughter Lily that I would finish coaching her soccer team. So every Friday, I have driven back to Youngstown, Ohio, to coach the St. Rose U10 soccer team on Saturdays. We are 6-0 with one game left to play and I am thinking that if I can coach this soccer team to an undefeated season, I should be really successful coaching the Titans to a great year, LOL.
Last but not least, my wife is happy because we finally found a place to call home in Michigan.
I am loving my time here and can't wait for the season to start. I hope you enjoyed reading about my first 30 days, and I look forward to seeing all the Titan fans inside and outside of Calihan Hall this year.
GO TITANS!!
