DETROIT (7/13/2015) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball program had a great fall recruiting class and the Titans have followed that up with the addition of big man
Jalen Gibson (Detroit, Mich./River Rouge).Gibson – a 6-8, 220-LB forward - is currently enrolled in summer classes at UDM and will have four years of eligibility.
"He is a big kid who can go inside and out," said head coach
Ray McCallum. "He comes from a winning program under an outstanding coach. He is a tremendous rebounder, very athletic and a good student so we are very happy to have him with us."
He comes from a well-coached high school program that is led by longtime college coach LaMonta Stone. A three-year varsity letter winner, Gibson was tabbed Class B Third-Team All-State as well as Honorable Mention Area All-West by the Detroit News.
The team also made the regional semifinals and tallied 18 wins on the year, ranking ninth in the final MLive boy's basketball poll.
Gibson averaged 15 points, 10 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game as a senior. He posted season highs on the season with 24 points in a victory over Romulus and 17 rebounds with 17 points in a win over Detroit University Prep Science and Math.
He played AAU for the Michigan Playmakers and was ranked No. 56 in the state by Prep Hoops last summer.
Gibson is the third player in the growing 2015 recruiting class, which includes two fall signees in
Gerald Blackshear (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Western HS) and
Josh McFolley (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Western HS). Blackshear and McFolley helped Detroit Western to an undefeated season and a PSL and Class A state championships this past year. McFolley was selected to the Detroit News Class A First Team, while Blackshear garnered honorable mention accolades.
Coach McCallum also announced that
Youssoupha Kane will be transferring from the program.
