DETROIT (7/2/2015) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team announced its complete non-conference schedule for the 2015-16 season today (Thursday, July 2), which features a total of 11 games -- including six regular-season home dates highlighted by a visit from Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) champion Northeastern. The Titans will also welcome Toledo, Bowling Green and Central Florida to historic Calihan Hall.
Overall, the non-conference schedule features six teams that posted 20 or more wins in 2014-15 - with two other foes garnering 19 – while six of the nine Division I opponents made a trip to the postseason last year. Eight of the nine Division I schools had winning records and combined to tally a 176-125 overall mark (58.4 percent) last season.
"This is another great schedule that will prepare us for the Horizon League regular season and tournament," said Detroit Titans head coach
Ray McCallum. "We want to challenge our guys and believe this is one of the best schedules we've ever had, considering six opponents won 20 or more games last year."
The Titans open their 2015 non-conference slate with a home game against Central State on Nov. 16, before hitting the road to face ACC power Pittsburgh on Nov. 20 at the Peterson Events Center. The Panthers finished 19-15 overall last season including a postseason trip to the NIT.
The following week, Detroit will return home to the Motor City to host U-M Dearborn on Nov. 23, before heading south for a pair of games against Oral Roberts (Nov. 28) and Vanderbilt (Dec. 2). ORU finished 19-15 last season -10-6 in the Summit League - before moving on to the second round of the CBI Tournament. The Commodores won 21 games last year, including nine in the SEC, before winning two games in the NIT.
Detroit will then host four-straight home games as the Titans battle Northeastern (Dec. 5), Toledo (Dec. 9), Bowling Green (Dec. 12) and Central Florida (Dec. 19). Northeastern, Toledo and Bowling Green all recorded 20-win seasons last year.
The non-conference schedule will conclude with a pair of road games at Western Kentucky (Dec. 22) and at Eastern Michigan (Dec. 28). The Hilltoppers finished 20-12 last season, 12-6 in Conference USA, while the Eagles were 21-14 overall with a postseason trip to the CBI.
The Titans return Horizon League Freshman of the Year guard/forward
Paris Bass, who just returned to the Motor City after participating in the Nike Basketball Academy in Santa Monica, California as one of the top-20 players in the nation. Last year, Bass finished his rookie campaign scoring 410 points, the most by a Titan freshman since
Ray McCallum in 2010, and averaged 12.4 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game.
