DETROIT (8/21/2015) --
A double-overtime thriller opened the 2015 season for the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team, but the Titans gave up the golden goal early in second overtime to fall 3-2 to visiting University of Toledo at Titan Field.

The Titans (0-1) started strong out of the gate in the season and home opener, scoring the first goal of the season just six minutes into the game. Senior forward Sara Zawacki (Dearborn, Mich. / Marian) corralled a ball off a turnover and fired a shot into the top left corner of the net from about 12 yards out.

Freshman goalkeeper Claudia Eustaquio (Mississauga, Ont. / Philip Pocock Catholic), making her first career start, turned away four shots on goal in the first half to help stake the Titans to a 1-0 halftime lead. The Rockets (1-0) had a 6-2 advantage in shots in the first half, while Detroit scored on its only shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes.

Detroit made it 2-0 early in the second half, as junior Anna Mindling (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) received a terrific pass from classmate Kristen Tobin (Bay City, Mich. / John Glenn) in the box and knocked it into the back of the net from eight yards out. Mindling's first goal of the season came in the 49th minute.

Toledo scored eight minutes later as Isa Echeverri headed home its first goal of the game. Minutes later, the Rockets tied the game, 2-2, as Sophie Pohl fired a shot into the top corner of the net.

Detroit nearly scored the go-ahead goal just minutes later as Tobin's header was saved followed by a shot by freshman defender Carly Fiorido (Windsor, Ont. / Holy Names) that was blocked. The Titans had a good offensive attack in the second half, receiving six corner kicks in the second frame.

The two teams remained tied after 90 minutes pushing the match to overtime. Each team had a great look on net in the first overtime with Mindling nearly ending the game on a shot in the box, followed just seconds later by a Toledo chance that went just wide of the goal.

Toledo scored the game-winning goal off a corner kick just one minute into the second overtime as Echeverri scored her second of the game.

Mindling finished the game with team-highs of three shots and three shots on goal. Senior defender Alyssa Lotito (Macomb, Mich. / Eisenhower) added two shots for Detroit. Eustaquio played all 101 minutes in net for the Titans, turning away four shots in her first career game. Both squads had 11 shots during the match, while Detroit finished with the edge in corner kicks, 7-4.

The Titans return to the pitch Friday, Aug. 28, hosting Ohio University for a 3 p.m. non-conference contest at Titan Field. The match is the second of a doubleheader with the Detroit men's soccer squad at Titan Field. Both games are set to be broadcast on ESPN3.com with the men's team kicking off against IUPUI at noon.
