Titans Top St. Bonaventure, Finish 2-0 at Radisson Invitational

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (9/13/2015) -- For the second straight season, the University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team went unbeaten at its regular season tournament after the Titans recorded a 2-1 victory over St. Bonaventure in the final day of the inaugural Radisson Invitational on the campus of Western Michigan University.

Detroit finished the tournament 2-0 and earned second place in the four-team invitational. Western Michigan also went 2-0 and earned the tournament title by virtue of its goal differential. Following the tournament, Tyler Moorman, Spiro Pliakos and Spencer Steinwascher were each named to the Radisson Invitational All-Tournament Team.

The Titans evened their record on the season at 2-2-2. Detroit is unbeaten (3-0-1) in its last four games in a regular season tournament after winning the 2014 UNLV Nike Invitational in Las Vegas.

After a scoreless first half that saw just seven shots total (six by Detroit), the Titans scored two goals just three minutes apart to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Sophomore Spiro Pliakos (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) was fouled just outside of the box to set up a free kick and good scoring opportunity for the Titans. Pliakos fired the free kick towards the net and after deflecting off a few bodies and the far post, senior Jason Leslie (Troy, Mich. / Troy) got his foot on the ball for his first goal of the season. Leslie's tally came in the 67th minute and gave Detroit a 1-0 lead.

St. Bonaventure received a red card following the goal meaning that the Bonnies would be playing a man down for the rest of the match.

Just minutes later, Detroit had good position in the offensive end. Junior Aidan Kuhls (Kansas City, Mo. / Bishop Miege) received the ball up top in front of the box and touched a ball to an open Pliakos, just the the left of him. Pliakos fired a perfect shot into the corner of the net for his first goal of 2015 and handed Detroit a 2-0 lead in the 70th minute.

The Bonnies scored their only of the game just five minutes later after earning a rare opportunity in the box. Sophomore Robbie Beckwell (Shelby Township, Mich. / Henry Ford II), making his first start of the season, came out to challenge St. Bonaventure's Kosi Nwafornso, but he was able to get it past Beckwell and into the back of the net.

Beckwell, who made a big save with a kick save late in the first half, came up with another stop in the 84th minute to help preserve the victory. Beckwell made two saves overall to earn his first collegiate triumph in net for the Titans.

Detroit finished the game with a big advantage in shots (15-3) and shots on goal (8-3). The Titans also had all seven corner kicks in the match. Senior Jacob Prud'homme (South Lyon, Mich. / South Lyon) and junior Adam Clauss (Grand Haven, Mich. / Spring Lake) each had game-highs of three shots. Pliakos, who finished the game with three points, had two shots on goal, while juniors Tommy Bowman (Beverly Hills, Mich. / Seaholm) and Tyler Moorman (Caledonia, Mich. / East Kentwood) each added two shots for Detroit.

The Radisson Invitational is brand new this year and featured the Titans, St. Bonaventure, Western Illinois and host Western Michigan. Detroit plays the Broncos later in the season, welcoming WMU to Detroit on Sept. 30.

"I want to thank the Radisson for putting on a fantastic tournament," UDM head coach Nicholas Deren '99 said. "The hospitality was first class the entire weekend."

The Titans will play their third match in six days on Wednesday, Sept. 16, visiting the University of Michigan for a 7 p.m. match in Ann Arbor. Detroit opens the Horizon League schedule on Saturday, Sept. 19 hosting Valparaiso at Titan Field for a 1 p.m. contest.
