DETROIT (9/28/2015) -- The University of Detroit Mercy and Oakland University will renew their annual rivalry as the #MetroSeries begins its clash this week with a women's soccer showdown.
The Titans will visit the Golden Grizzlies on Wednesday, Sept. 30, for the first match-up of 2015-16. Last year, Oakland claimed the Metro Rivalry Cup, 26-10, in the first year of the rivalry series.
With Oakland winning the series last year, rules stipulate that, "The school that wins the cup the previous year will retain the cup in an event of a tie."
The scoring rules have been tweaked from its inaugural campaign.
- For softball, two points will be awarded to the winner of the season series (best of three). If the teams only play twice, points can be split, while if the teams met just once in the regular season, the winner of the one game would receive the two points
- For Horizon League Tournament match-ups, two points will be awarded to the victor in the head-to-head meetings in men's and women's basketball and soccer, women's tennis and softball
Detroit and Oakland have officially branded the #MetroSeries last year. Separated by just 26 miles, Detroit and Oakland are the only Division I schools located in the Metro Detroit area and are both members of the Horizon League. The Golden Grizzlies and Titans will compete in men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's golf, men's and women's soccer, softball, women's tennis, men's and women's track and field.
The winner of each competition will be awarded points, with cross country, golf and track and field being decided by the highest finish at the Horizon League Championships. The school with the most points at the end of the season will be awarded the Metro Rivalry Cup.
