Reynolds, Urbanick Earn Weekly Honors After 3-0 WeekUniversity of Detroit Mercy women's basketball standouts
Rosanna Reynolds and
Nicole Urbanick each received honors on Monday following their play last week. Reynolds was named the Horizon League Player of the Week and Urbanick was selected the College Sports Madness HL Player of the Week after helping Detroit to a 3-0 record last week.
It's Reynolds second career Horizon League Player of the Week honor, while Urbanick has been named the College Sports Madness HL Player of the Week two times in the 2015-16 campaign. Reynolds, a redshirt-junior guard, averaged 19.6 points, 5.6 assists and 5.6 rebounds, while shooting 50 percent from the field and 85 percent from the free throw line in Detroit's three wins. She had a season-high eight assists against Valparaiso and a season-best 26 points in a win at UIC.
Urbanick led Detroit with 67 points last week, averaging 22.3 points per contest. The team's leading scorer connected on 48.7 percent (19-of-39) of her field goal attempts, posting 24 points against the Vikings and a game-high 31 points in Detroit's road win over UIC. The sophomore sharpshooter made 14, 3-pointers during the week and shot 14-of-29 from beyond the arc during the three-game stretch.
Rosie Four Points Shy of 1,000Redshirt-junior guard
Rosanna Reynolds enters Thursday's game against Wright State just four points shy of 1,000 in her Titan career. Reynolds surpassed the 800-point plateau mark against No. 8 Maryland and reached the 900-point mark against Western Michigan earlier this season.
She would become the 20th player in Detroit women's basketball history to surpass the 1,000-point mark and first since Senee Shearer during the 2013-14 season. Reynolds also became the 12th player in school history to hit 100 triples in her career when she sank a 3-pointer in the third quarter vs. Youngstown State.
Titans Win Third-Straight at UICDetroit shot better than 50 percent for the second time this season and used a strong second-half effort in an 89-80 victory over UIC on Jan. 9. The Titans had three players score more than 20 points, led by sophomore
Nicole Urbanick, who finished with 31 points. Junior
Rosanna Reynolds totaled a season-best 26 points and sophomore
Brianne Cohen scored a career-high 20 points for the Titans. The trio combined for 77 of Detroit's season-high 89 points.
The Titans shot a season-high 50.9 percent (28-of-55) for the game, while connecting on 11-of-25 shots from beyond the arc. Detroit also made 22-of-29 free throws in the win. UDM was 14-of-22 from the field (63.6) in the second half, including 7-of-10 in the fourth quarter.
The contest was back-and-forth for much of the fourth quarter and was tied, 73-73, with 4:03 remaining after Urbanick split a pair of free throws following an offensive foul by UIC. Urbanick hit her 14th triple of the week and seventh of the game, giving Detroit a 76-73 lead with 3:45 left. UIC pulled to within two points three more times, the last coming at the 1:32 mark after Ruvanna Campbell hit a pair of free throws to cut the UDM lead to 82-80.
But Detroit's defense was solid in the final minutes, forcing UIC into 0-of-4 shooting in the last 46 seconds. The Titans were just as solid from the free throw line with Reynolds hitting 3-of-4 attempts and Urbanick both free throw shots in the last 32 seconds.
The last time Detroit had three players score 20 points was Dec. 7, 2013 when
Ellisha Crosby (24), Megan Hatter (21) and Senee Shearer (20) each reached the plateau in a victory over Chicago State.
All-Time SeriesThe Titans lead the all-time series with Wright State, 25-22. Detroit is 13-10 at home against the Raiders in the series that began in 1994. WSU has won the last four meetings against the Titans, but Detroit is 5-5 against Wright State in the past 10 outings. All three of WSU's conference games have come at home so far in the 2015-16 season. Wright State has earned wins over UIC, Valparaiso and Northern Kentucky, with the latter the closest of the three at 66-61. It's just the fourth true road game of the year for WSU, which holds a 2-1 road record and a 4-2 overall record away from Dayton.
Kim Demmings leads the Horizon League in scoring at 18.8 points per game. She shoots 38.7 percent from the floor and 31.7 from beyond the arc. The 32 points were the most by a Titan since Reynolds' 33 points at IPFW in December 2014 and the mark is tied for the most in the Horizon League this season with Kim Demmings. Urbanick is hot as of late from downtown, converting on 24-of-46 shots (52.1 percent) from beyond the arc in her last five games.
