KALAMAZOO, Mich. (1/22/16) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 match at Western Michigan University from West Hill Athletic Club on Friday afternoon.

Detroit fell behind in the match early after finishing on the wrong end of a clean-sweep in doubles. Junior Nynke Van Der Goot and freshman Iris Thioux put up a solid fight from the third position, but ultimately dropped a back-and-forth 6-4 decision.

In singles, senior Valeryia Kulikovskaya bounced back from a disappointing 6-1 loss in the opening set to record a hard-fought 7-5 win in the second, but fell in a narrow 6-3 third frame.

Thioux, Detroit's lone newcomer, jumped out to an early 5-2 lead in the opening set against WMU's Denise Azcui, before a furious rally gave Azcui a 7-5 victory in the first singles set. Azcui went on to win the second set, 6-1, and escape with a point.

Junior Anna Davydova fell in a tight affair, 6-3 and 7-5. Davydova clawed back with a strong second frame, but could not complete the comeback.

With the loss, the Titans fall to 0-2 in the early part of the spring season. Meanwhile, the Broncos improved to 3-1 and extended their all-time series lead to 8-0 over Detroit.

The Titans will take a brief break in action before returning to the court Saturday, Feb. 6 at Ball State University.
