Titans Bounce Oakland on Drayton’s Golden Goal

DETROIT (10/19/16) – Junior Phylisha Drayton broke a scoreless affair with the golden goal in the third minute of overtime, knocking off rival Oakland University on Wednesday afternoon in Metro Series action from Titan Field.

With the win, the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer program has won seven of its last eight contests and improves to 9-6-1 on the season and 5-1-1 in Horizon League play.

For the game-winner, Drayton collected a pass from senior captain Anna Mindling at the top of the box, split two defenders with one touch and fired the shot low into the back of the net past the outstretched arms of the Golden Grizzlies' keeper.

Junior Marina Manzo made eight crucial saves, providing the Titans with the defensive boost to lead the squad to victory with her fourth shutout of the season.

The Titans were able to earn the win despite Oakland owning the edge in total shots (11-7), shots on goal (8-4) and corner kicks (6-5). The Golden Grizzlies held the statistical advantage, but most of the action occurred away from net thanks to a stellar defensive effort from the Titans.

The tandem of Drayton and Mindling nearly connected for a goal in the first half, but a defensive clear on the goal line kept the game scoreless throughout regulation. The duo again found each other in the second, with Mindling's shot being stopped at the goal line.

Drayton, Mindling and sophomore Molly Kane each recorded two shots in the win, with Drayton and Mindling leading the team with two shots on net apiece.

The Titans have two games remaining before the Horizon League postseason tournament. Detroit Mercy first travels to Northern Kentucky on Saturday, Oct. 22, before closing out the regular season at UIC on Friday, Oct. 28.
