Titans Picked Second, Reynolds Voted Preseason Player of the Year

INDIANAPOLIS (11/2/2016) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team was selected to finish second in the Horizon League and senior guard Rosanna Reynolds was voted the Preseason Player of the Year after the league office released the preseason honors Wednesday afternoon. The preseason poll and teams are voted on by the league's head coaches, Sports Information Directors and members of the media.

The Titans, which went 15-15 and 11-7 in the Horizon League in head coach Bernard Scott's first year in 2015-16, earned 253 votes, which only trailed reigning league champion Green Bay (299 votes). The Phoenix earned 29 of the 30 first-place votes.

Milwaukee followed Detroit Mercy with 246 votes and Youngstown State and Wright State rounded out the top five. It's the highest the Titans have been voted as a team since Detroit Mercy was picked second in the 2012-13 preseason poll.

Reynolds, a two-time All-League player, was voted Preseason Player of the Year and headlined the First Team, while junior forward Brianne Cohen was selected to the Preseason All-Conference Second Team. The Titans were one of three teams with multiple players named to the All-League first or second teams.

Reynolds was First Team All-Horizon League last year after finishing with 15.6 points, 5.9 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game. She ranked second in the Horizon League in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.1) and free-throw percentage (87.2), third in assists per game and tied-for-sixth in scoring during her junior season last year and was the Co-Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Winter.

Cohen was named the Horizon League Sixth Player of the Year during her sophomore season in 2015-16 after leading the Titans in scoring (15.9 points per game) and coming off the bench in all but two games. She ranked third in league games in scoring at 17.9 points per game and was second in the conference in field goal percentage (57.3). Cohen had the largest scoring leap (12.1 points) from one season to the next in school history last year.

Detroit Mercy is nearing the start of the 2016-17 season and opens the campaign with three-straight road contests. The regular season begins at Delaware State on Friday, Nov. 11, in Dover, Delaware.
