Women's Basketball Inks Two Local Products to NLI

DETROIT (11/15/2016) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball program and second-year head coach Bernard Scott has announced the signing of two local products -- Kayla Brown (Flint, Mich. / Robichaud) and Lexey Tobel (Hartland, Mich. / Hartland) -- to the Titan family.

Both signed their NLI during the fall signing period. They are the first two recruits to coach Scott's class of 2017.

"I'm so excited to officially welcome Kayla and Lexey to the Detroit Mercy family," Scott said. "These two are individuals that are very good players, great people and come from great families. Both of these young ladies were our top priorities for the 2017 class."

Kayla Brown was Class B First Team All-State and the Conference Player of the Year as a junior for Robichaud High School in nearby Dearborn Heights. She was named Team MVP and a captain and also earned All-Metro West and First Team All-Conference honors during her junior season.

The Flint, Michigan, native averaged 23.6 points and 8.0 assists per game in 2015-16 and begins her senior season just eight points shy of 1,000 career points. She had a game high of 31 points during her junior season. Her father, Nate Brown, played collegiate basketball at Mott Community College and Maryland-Eastern Shore.

"Kayla Brown is one of the top guards in the Michigan area," Scott said. "She has a high basketball IQ and can affect the game in so many ways with her passing ability and her ability to score. She's aggressive and plays with a lot of confidence."

Lexey Tobel is a three-year letter winner for Hartland and two-time First Team All-Conference, First Team All-County and Honorable Mention All-State honoree at Hartland. Tobel helped lead her Eagles' squad to the school's first regional championship and state quarterfinal appearance as a sophomore. She tallied 17 points in the regional title victory.

Following her sophomore and junior seasons, Tobel earned the Team MVP at Hartland and was voted the Best Defensive Player as a freshman. She was also a captain as a junior and has a single-game high of 32 points during her varsity career.

"Lexey Tobel is a 5-11 guard/forward that will fit well into our system because of her versatility," Scott said. "She has the ability to score off the bounce or knock down the jump shot. Lexey is a very good athlete that competes on both ends of the floor."

Added coach Scott, "What I like most about Kayla and Lexey is that they come from winning programs. We wanted to make sure we're bringing in players that know how to win. It was also important for us to bring in good students and both of them do very well in the classroom. I'm very confident Kayla and Lexey will do big things here at Detroit Mercy!"
