Titans Ready For In-State Rival Eastern Michigan On Wednesday

DETROIT (11/29/2016) -- One of the longest and oldest rivalries in Titan history continues as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team welcomes Eastern Michigan on Wednesday, Nov. 30.

Game time is set for 7 p.m., inside historic Calihan Hall.

The game will be televised locally on WADL TV-38 and on ESPN3 with Dan Dickerson and Earl Cureton on the call. The "Voice of the Titans" Cliff Russell will have the action over the airwaves on 910 AM Superstation. Live stats will also be provided.

The game marks the 76th career meeting between the two schools ranking fourth in Titan history behind only Loyola (121), Xavier (94) and Marquette (88). The Titans are 58-17 all-time against the Eagles with the 58 wins representing the most over any opponent in school history.

The game has plenty of Titan and local Detroit Metro area ties. Eastern Michigan assistant coach Kevin Mondro was a three-year letter winner for Detroit Mercy graduating in 1997 and serving as assistant coach from 1998-2008 - including interim head coach for the final 16 games in 2007-08. Mondro was on staff when head coach Bacari Alexander '99 and assistant coach Jermaine Jackson '99 suited up for the Titans and won back-to-back NCAA tournament games in the late 90's and was later on the sidelines with coach Alexander under Perry Watson. Another EMU assistant coach Benny White was a Titan graduate assistant coach in 1978-79 and then an assistant coach from 1993-95 under coach Watson.

Along with native Detroiters in coach Alexander and coach Jackson, Eagles' head coach Rob Murphy also hails from the Motor City.

ALL-TIME VS. EASTERN MICHIGAN
Eastern Michigan is one of the longest and oldest rivals in school history with this being the 76th career meeting between the two schools located just about 35 miles away from each other.

The 76th meeting marks the fourth-most against any opponent in Titan history, and Detroit Mercy has dominated the series winning nine of the last 10 games for a 58-17 overall advantage.

The series has even been more lopsided at home where Detroit Mercy is 32-4 against EMU.

ABOUT THE EAGLES
Eastern Michigan is 4-3 on the season and has won two in a row at home over Madonna (97-60) and Omaha (94-77). EMU is 3-0 at home on the season but 0-2 in true road games and 1-1 on neutral courts.

Ray Lee leads the team in scoring at 19.4 points per game. Willie Mangum IV is tallying 16.1 points, while James Thompson IV is averaging a double-double with 15.1 points and a team-high 11.4 rebounds. He also has five-straight games with a double-double.

The Eagles are averaging 81.4 points on the year, while giving up 76.4.

Eastern Michigan was picked to win the Mid-American Conference's West Division in the MAC preseason poll.

CALIHAN HOSPITALITY
The Titans have made life tough for non-conference opponents visiting Calihan Hall as Detroit Mercy is 83-20 in its last 103 home games against non-league schools.

AGAINST THE MAC
Detroit Mercy is 178-107 all-time against current members of the Mid-American Conference.

BALL CONTROL FOR BLACK
Junior DeShawndre Black has looked every bit of the steady point guard the Titans want.

He has had at least three assists in five of the first six games and is coming off a season-best seven assists against Manhattan.

He also has an outstanding 7-1 assist-to-turnover ratio on the season (21 assists, 3 turnovers)- leading the Horizon League in that category and ranking sixth in the nation - including 13 assists and just one turnover in the last three games.

He has also picked up his offense scoring 14 points at New Hampshire and nine versus Manhattan.

HULK HOGAN
Junior Jaleel Hogan has once again been an offensive force down low for the Titans ranking fourth in the Horizon League in field-goal percentage at 59.6 percent (28-of-47).

He is currently second in school history in career field-goal percentage at 58.9 percent trailing only Eli Holman '12 (60.5%).

He is coming off a season-best 19 points against Manhattan where he tied his career-best with eight field goals, while also just missing a double-double corralling nine rebounds.

He has now netted double figures in scoring in five of the first six games scoring 18 points in just 15 minutes at New Hampshire, 16 points at Illinois and 12 against Florida State and Adrian.

Hogan is second on the team and 12th in the conference in scoring at 13.2 ppg.

ALLEN COMING ALONG
Freshman Corey Allen has notched double figures in scoring twice this season, including posting a team-high 16 points in his collegiate debut against Adrian.

He then tallied 10 points against Manhattan.

Allen is currently fourth on the team in scoring at 8.5 points and ranks 13th in the Horizon League in three-point field goal percentage (38.1%).

CAREER NIGHT FOR MCFOLLEY
Sophomore Josh McFolley tallied a career-high 25 points at ETSU going 8-of-17 from the field and 7-of-9 from behind the arc.

It was his second career 20-point game and his fifth career contest where he knocked down at least four triples.

The seven triples are currently the most by a player in the HL this season, and were the most by a Titan since Jon Goode sank eight at UIC on Jan. 19, 2008.

AMONG THE TOP 10
Sophomore Josh McFolley is currently leading the team and ranks 10th in the Horizon League in scoring at 14.5 points per game.

He is also third in the HL in three-point field goal percentage (47.4%) and three-point field goals made (3.0) as well as tied for eighth in steals per game (1.3), all team highs.

He has been in double-figures in scoring in four games, including the last two with 13 at New Hampshire and 18 versus Manhattan.

CJ FOR THREE
Senior Chris Jenkins is off to a slow start from behind the arc, but he currently ranks second in school history in three-point field goal percentage at 42.1 percent (80-of-190).

Jenkins has scored in double figures in four games on the season with a season-high 18 at Florida State. He is also coming off a 15-point, six-rebound effort against Manhattan.

He is now third on the team in scoring (11.8 ppg.) - 18th in the HL - while topping the squad on the boards (5.7 rpg.) - 13th in the HL.

JUST PERFECT
Sophomore Gerald Blackshear Jr. had a perfect day shooting against Adrian by tying his career high with 12 points in going 5-for-5 from the field.

He just recorded his second double-digit scoring effort of the year with 10 points (4-6 FG) and six boards against Manhattan, and that was after a nine-point and season-high seven-rebound performance at New Hampshire, where he was 4-of-5 from the field.

On the year, he is 16-of-22 (72.7%) from the field, but he does not have enough field goals to qualify for the league lead.

SHOW ME THE WAY ED
Freshman walk-on Ed Carter III had a great collegiate debut as he dished out a game-high five assists in the season opener. What was even better is that he recorded five assists against zero turnovers.

He went on to pick up four more assists before he recorded his first collegiate turnover.

On the year, he has nine assists against just two turnovers.

SENIOR STATUS
Four seniors are on the Titan roster in Matthew Grant, Chris Jenkins, Pat Robinson Jr., and Jarod Williams. The quartet has played in 266 career games with 139 starts.

DOUBLE J
Senior Jarod Williams came up with his first career double-double in the season-opening win over Adrian as he ended the contest with 10 points and a career-best 10 boards.

He came back to record 16 points - just two shy of his career high - at ETSU.

On the year, he is shooting 57.7 percent in averaging 6.5 points and 3.5 rebounds.

CRASHING THE GLASS
Sophomore Aaron Foster-Smith tallied a career-best seven rebounds along with six points at Florida State, a team that features two seven-footers.

HE CAN SHOOT THE 3?
Freshman seven-footer Malik Eichler is 4-for-4 behind the arc this season.

In a stat anomaly, the seven-footer almost has as many 3-pointers (4) as total rebounds (6) on the year.

NEW FACES
Detroit Mercy has eight newcomers on the squad, the most since the 2008-09 season when then first-year head coach Ray McCallum had 10.

The eight newcomers are among the most in the nation behind only Southeast Missouri (11), Eastern Kentucky (10), Tulsa (10), East Carolina (9),  Jacksonville State (9), Memphis (9), SIUE (9), UT Martin (9) and tied with Indiana, Tulane and UCF.

The eight newcomers include one Division I transfer in Kameron Chatman (Michigan), two junior college transfers in DeShawndre Black (Schoolcraft College) and Isaiah Jones (Mt. San Jacinto College) and five true freshmen in Corey Allen (Ypsilanti, Mich./Ypsilanti), Malik Eichler (Berlin, Germany/MacDuffie Prep (MA), Cole Long (Orangeville, Ont./Athletic Institute Basketball Academy), Jacob Joubert (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington) and Ed Carter III (Detroit, Mich./Edison).

A GIANT IN CALIHAN HALL
Freshman Malik Eichler stands at 7-feet tall and he is believed to be just the fifth seven-footer in school history and the first since 7-3, 275-pound center Jason Bennett in 2008-09.

FREQUENT FLYER MILES
The Titans went on a four-game road swing in November where Detroit Mercy traveled over 5,000 miles in a nine-day span.

It started with a trip to East Tennessee State (1,244 miles round trip), a game at Illinois (381 miles), at Florida State from Champaign, Illinois, (861) and a return flight home after the game at FSU (998). It ended on Wednesday with a flight from Detroit Mercy to Durham, New Hampshire (1,562 miles round trip).

TOUGH SCHEDULE COACH
The eleven (11) non-conference foes on the Titan men's basketball schedule posted a 197-161 (.550) last season with four teams making the postseason in East Tennessee State (Vegas 16), Florida State (NIT), New Hampshire (CIT) and Fort Wayne (NIT).

Florida State is currently receiving votes in the AP and coaches poll. ETSU is ranked No. 22 in the mid-major poll, while Fort Wayne received a vote nationally in the coaches poll as well as in the mid-major poll.

2017 LITTLE CAESARS MOTOR CITY MADNESS UPDATE
The Horizon League approved a revised bracket for the 2017 Little Caesars Horizon League Men's and Women's Basketball Championships. In the new format, the women's basketball championship will run concurrently with the men's from March 3-7, at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.

The five days of games will feature men's and women's tournament contests on each day, beginning with the 8-9 and 7-10 games on Friday, March 3. The winners of those contests will play the No. 1 and 2 seeds in the second round, with the victors advancing to Monday's semifinals. Sunday's third round contests will see the 4-5 and 3-6 seeds play for a berth in the semifinals. Semifinal winners will meet on Tuesday, March 7, for the Horizon League title and an automatic bid into the NCAA Men's and Women's Tournaments.

2017 marks the final year the Little Caesars Horizon League Men's and Women's Basketball Championships will be contested at Joe Louis Arena before moving to the state-of-the-art Little Caesars Arena, currently under construction in downtown Detroit.
