Titans Downed By Falcons

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (12/10/2016) -- Junior Jaleel Hogan tallied 16 points and six rebounds as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team was upended by Bowling Green, 74-61, on Saturday afternoon at the Stroh Center.

Hogan was 6-of-9 from the field and also had two assists and a steal.

Senior Chris Jenkins posted 12 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Sophomore Gerald Blackshear Jr. tied his career high with 12 points and grabbed a season-best nine boards and sophomore Josh McFolley recorded 10 points and a career-high eight rebounds.

The Titans (1-9) came out with a lot of energy at the start as a steal by Blackshear Jr., led to a basket from Hogan, who had 12 points in the first half alone. The Titans would take a six-point lead early on at 12-6 on back-to-back buckets from Hogan and Blackshear Jr.

Bowling Green (4-6) came back to jump ahead, 20-16, midway through the first half, and also led by four at 23-19 when the Titans mounted a charge going on a 12-2 spurt. Hogan started that with a basket and after a steal by Jenkins, he found McFolley for a layup to knot the game at 23-23.

After a BGSU basket, the Titans reeled off eight-straight points, the last on a jumper from McFolley to make it 31-25 with 4:34 left. Detroit Mercy would later increase its advantage to nine, 38-29, with 1:50 remaining as Jenkins buried a 3-pointer before taking a 38-31 lead at the break.

The Titans shot 46.9-percent (15-of-32) in the first half. They also outrebounded the Falcons, 20-14, and forced nine turnovers.

The second half was a different story as Bowling Green mounted a 19-2 run in an eight-minute stretch to surge in front, 50-42, with 11:10 left in the game. The Titans were able to curb the Falcon offense after that and were within five on two occasions, the latest at 52-47 with 6:43 on the clock, but BGSU was able to pull away.

Senior Jarod Williams registered nine points. Junior DeShawndre Black had three assists and freshman Cole Long pulled down six caroms.

The Titans did win the glass for the second-straight game, 39-34, and won the points in the paint, 40-26. Detroit Mercy also shot a season-high 72.2-percent at the free-throw line.

Detroit Mercy will finish the month of December with four-straight at home in historic Calihan Hall. The Titans will begin the homestand with Western Kentucky next Saturday, Dec. 17, with tip-off at 2 p.m.
