Full Results MILWAUKEE, WIS. (3/26/16) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team picked up a dramatic 4-3 victory over Milwaukee in the Horizon League opener on Saturday afternoon from North Shore in the Badger State.
The Titans (2-5, 1-0 HL) earned the dramatic victory after holding off a spirited comeback by the host Panthers (6-7, 0-1 HL).
Detroit began the day with a hard fought point in doubles. The Panthers took the early edge with a convincing 6-1 win from the third position, before
Valeryia Kulikovskaya and
Viktoria Laskutova evened the score with a 6-4 win from the second spot. The point came down to the top line, where
Anna Davydova and
Irina Slizovskaya edged Milwaukee's top duo, 7-6 (11-9).
The Panthers earned the first singles point from the No. 4 spot, before Laskutova and freshman
Iris Thioux put Detroit ahead 3-1 with wins from the fifth and sixth positions.
Milwaukee did not go easily, however, as the Panthers stormed back into the match with back-to-back wins from the top two lines to even the score, 3-3.
The match came down to the third position, where Slizovskaya outlasted Laurie Clark, 7-6 and 6-3, to seal the victory for the Titans.
Detroit turns around quickly as the team heads north to take on Green Bay on Sunday. First serve against the Phoenix is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET from Western Racquet & Fitness Club in Green Bay, Wis.
