Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Titans Clipped By No. 19/17 Marquette At Midwest Classic

COLUMBUS, Ohio (3/6/2015) -- Sophomore Mark Anstead tied his career high with six points and the Titans nearly overcame a 5-0 run by No. 19/17 Marquette as the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team was edged, 10-8, at the Midwest Classic. The event is being hosted by Ohio State at Ohio Stadium.

Anstead tied his career high with three goals and three assists on the day. Sophomore Sean Birney netted a pair and senior Andy Hebden, junior JD Hess and sophomore Alec Gilhooly each tallied a marker.

Junior Jason Weber made 14 saves in net and picked up a career-high seven ground balls and senior Paul Bitetti led the defense with two caused turnovers and two GB's.

Detroit (0-5) had a 3-1 lead at the end of the first half, but Marquette (3-1) was able to jump in front with five-straight goals. The Titans fought back and eventually took an 8-7 lead.

The charge started early in the fourth as Anstead was the playmaker again finding Birney for a score to make it 7-6 at the 12:30 mark. A few minutes later, Detroit took advantage of a penalty as Anstead dished out a pass to Gilholly who tied things at 7-7 with 9:33 remaining. Weber then made a couple of saves and the Titans would set up their offense with Anstead locating Hebden to go ahead 8-7 with 6:50 left.

The red, white and blue had the lead for the next three minutes, but the Golden Eagles scored the final three goals in the last 3:56 for the win.

Sophomore Charlie Hayes ended the game with a career-high three ground balls and sophomore Lucas Ducharme had two GB's.

Detroit set a program record going 95.8 percent on clears (23-of-24), but lost the ground ball battle, 32-19.

The Titans will now have some time off to get ready for the MAAC season as Detroit opens up conference play at Manhattan on March 19.

Game Notes:
Marquette leads the all-time series, 4-0…  Detroit and Marquette are two of just eight Jesuit schools playing Division I lacrosse with the others in MAAC-rival Canisius, Fairfield, Georgetown, Holy Cross, Loyola (Md.) and St. Joseph's… Detroit is 0-11 all-time against ranked programs, including 0-3 this season with losses to No. 11/12 Ohio State and No. 1/2 Notre Dame… It was the fourth career hat trick for Anstead…  Anstead's career high in points is six against Robert Morris last season on three goals and three assists… Hess' other goal came at Quinnipiac last season… Last season, Weber made 19 saves against Marquette…
