HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. (4/24/2016) -- Senior
Wil Wittmann ended his career cementing his place as one of the best golfers in school history by earning All-Tournament honors as the University of Detroit Mercy men's golf team ended its season today at the Horizon League Championship.
Detroit played its best round of the event on Sunday recording a 303 to help the Titans take fifth with a 917 (313-303-301) total at the Par 72, 6,816-yard Mission Inn Resort's El Campeon Course.
"I am proud of the guys for battling," said head coach
Luke LaFave '02. "We learned a ton as a team for next year."
Wittmann was All-Tournament for the first time in his career as he finished tied for fourth with a season-best 217 (70-76-71). The 54-hole score was his best score at the Horizon League Championship as he ended his career with a 74.9 average, good for fourth in school history. His 74.62 season average was also good for 14th in the Titan record book. Â
"Wil made a great run at the title today," said coach LaFave. "He played terrific. He had a poor break on the last hole that led to an unplayable lie, but finished off showing guts and making a 25-foot putt for a 71. He played to win, and that's impressive."
Wittmann was in contention for a title right from the start with his opening-round 2-under 70, and he ended the event with a bang tallying a 1-under 71 on the final 18. He had 11 pars along with three birdies and eagled the Par 5, 14th hole.Â
He would end the tournament leading the field with two eagles, while also topping the team with 34 pars and tying for the team high with seven birdies. His 34 pars had him tied for fifth in the competition, and he was among the top 10 in Par 4 (+2, 4.07) and Par 5 (-3, 4.75) scoring average.
Senior
Josh Shaw carded his best ever Horizon League Championship performance tying for 21st with a 231 (78-77-76). Shaw knocked in three birdies and eight pars in the final round and ended his final collegiate event with 27 pars and six birdies. He was also tied for second among the 40 golfers with an even-par 3.00 average on the course's Par 3's.Â
Shaw ended his season with a career-low 76.4 average and his career with a 78.56 mark.
"Josh was solid and completed a most improved year," added coach LaFave. "It was a pleasure to coach Josh and Wil, and I know they'll both do great things going forward."
Freshman
Eric Macrow ended the tournament with his best round of 75 as he shared 23rd with a 233 (82-76-75) card. He began the day with an eagle on the Par 5 first hole and finished with four birdies and seven pars. Macrow's seven birdies over the weekend were also tied for the most on the squad.
Junior
Kyle Gaines tied for 27th with a 236 (83-74-79), while redshirt junior Davis Thompson placed 35th overall with a 244 (83-82-79). Gaines was solid down the stretch with eight pars in his final nine holes and was second on the Titans with 32 pars.Â
As a team, Detroit led the Horizon League with a +11, 3.18 average on the course's Par 3's and led the field with three eagles, while finishing third registering 150 pars.Â
Detroit will lose Shaw, Wittmann and senior
Aaron Knutson to graduation, but will return five members of this year's squad.Â
