DETROIT (4/26/16) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's track and field team was in action on a cool Tuesday evening for senior day in the 11
th Annual Dual vs. Oakland.
For the first time in the history of the meet, the dual was forced into a non-scoring format due to schedule complications during finals week for both programs. The meet was originally scheduled for April 9, but was postponed due to inclement winter weather.
With a little more than a week remaining before the Horizon League Outdoor Championships, which will be held at Valparaiso University from May 6-8, the Titans and Golden Grizzlies utilized the competition to continue training for the championship meet.
Following the meet, the careers of the 2016 senior class were honored for their commitment, contributions and dedication to the Titan track and field program. The 2016 senior class includes:
Grace Battista,
Jessica Doherty,
Allison Garner,
Haley Morairty and
Aisha Potts-Tyre.
In the 100-meter dash, Garner and freshman
Natalie Vizard led the Titans with a mark of 12.57.
Alyson Hamilton,
Brogan Holmes and
A.J. Carnathan followed with times of 12.61, 12.68 and 12.77, respectively.
Potts-Tyre and Battista each picked up hurdles wins, with Potts-Tyre taking down the 100-meter hurdle in 14.60 and Battista taking the 400-meter hurdle in 1:07.83.
Potts-Tyre also took down a trio of jump wins, with a clearance of 4.92 meters in the long jump, 10.91 meters in the triple jump and 1.51 meters in the high jump.
Peterson finished the 400-meter hurdles in 1:10.55, just ahead of
Paige Anderson in 1:10.97.
Holmes paced Detroit in the 200-meter dash with a mark of 25.60, followed by Hamilton at 26.31,
Jayona Dent at 26.40 and freshman
Kye Dozier at 26.58.
Dozier's time of 58.94 was a Titan best in the 400-meters, followed by
Elizabeth Mullen at 62.62.
The Titans went 1-2 in the 800-meter, with
Samantha Zakalowski leading the pack at 2:22.77 and Morairty right behind in 2:24.84.
In the 1,500-meter run, freshman
Katie Lyons ran unattached and ran the top Titan time of 4:45.36.
Sydnie Fetherolf clocked in at 4:52.75, followed by
Devon Sutton in 5:14.05.
Sophomore
Taylor Smith led Detroit in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:56.65, while
Jenny Ponkowski clocked in at 11:14.37. Freshman
Annmarie Taylor finished in 11:26.03, followed by
Sydney Shaw in 12 minutes flat.
The Titans had a pair of relay teams in action, with Anderson, Battista, Holmes and Fetherolf leading the way in the 4x400-meter in 4:19.43. Morairty, Mullen, Peterson and Zakalowski followed in 4:29.93.
Sophomore
Delaney O'Rourke led the Titans in the throwing events, highlighted by a win in the discus with a toss of 33.07 meters.
The Titans are back in action this weekend, sending members of the squad to the Hillsdale Relays and others to the Penn Relays.
