DETROIT (6/6/2016) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team and head coach
Bernard Scott has announced the addition of University of Michigan graduate transfer Kelsey Mitchell (Detroit, Mich. / Inkster). She will join the Titans for her fifth year of eligibility in 2016-17.
"We're excited to be adding a player of Kelsey's magnitude to our program," Scott said. "Kelsey, a Detroit native, will bring experience and toughness to our team after playing four seasons at Michigan. She will fit right in with our players both on and off the court. Kelsey will give us another scoring option at the post position. She's a player that can average double figures in points and rebounds.
"Having Kelsey join our Titan Family is just another step in the right direction for our program."
Mitchell played all 35 games for the Wolverines last season, starting 15 games for U-M. The six-foot forward averaged 6.2 points per game and 4.6 rebounds in 14.8 minutes per game. All were career high totals for the Detroit native, who was named the Most Improved Player at Michigan's year-end awards banquet. Mitchell was part of a Wolverine squad that advanced to the WNIT Final Four.
She scored in double figures six times in 2015-16 and was second on the squad with a 56.4 shooting percentage, while also ranking third on the team in rebounding. Mitchell tallied 216 points and 161 boards last season after totaling 23 points and 29 caroms in her first two seasons at Michigan.
She played in 60 games total during her career with Michigan, 57 of them in the past two seasons after suffering injuries in each of her first two years at Michigan. Mitchell played high school basketball for Inkster High School and placed third for the Michigan High School Miss Basketball honor during her senior year in 2011-12.
Mitchell helped lead Inkster to a Class A state championship as a junior in 2011 and was named to the Associated Press Class A all-state team as a senior, leading Inkster back to the state semifinals. She averaged 16 points and nine rebounds per game her senior season in high school.
Mitchell will help bolster a Detroit Mercy squad that returns its entire team from last year. The Titans went 15-15 last year in coach Scott's first season at the helm, which included an 11-7 mark and a fourth-place finish in the Horizon League.
