DETROIT (6/7/2016) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team and head coach
Bernard Scott went across the country and nearly halfway around the world to bring in New Zealander guard Gracie Roberts, who joins the Titan family as a JUCO transfer from North Idaho College.
Roberts will have three years left of elgibility and is set to join Detroit Mercy for the upcoming 2016-17 season.
"We are excited to add Gracie to our roster," Scott said. "She's a point guard that can flat out pass the basketball. She has a high basketball IQ which you need if you're going to be a great point guard at this level. She will fit right into our style of play. She's a hard worker and great teammate and we're happy to have her joining the Titan Family."
The 5-9 combo guard, who originally hails from Nelson, New Zealand, spent the 2015-16 season at NJCAA North Idaho. She played in all 30 games, averaging 2.9 points, 1.9 assists and 1.5 rebounds per game.
She graduated high school with a 3.8 GPA and while playing for Waimea College secondary school, Roberts was selected to the Waikato U19 Team, placing second at nationals as she was named to the U19 National Tournament Team. She also played with the New Zealand U19 and Nelson Sparks club team, while being voted to the NZ High School Tournament Team as a captain for her Waimea College squad.
Roberts was selected as the Nelson Junior Sportsperson of the Year, Nelson Secondary Schools Player of the Year and Nelson Basketball Junior Player of the Year in 2014. She also played for the New Zealand U17 Team in 2012.
Roberts joins University of Michigan graduate transfer Kelsey Mitchell, who was announced as an addition to the Titans on Monday. Both players are able to play with the Titans for the upcoming 2016-17 campaign. Detroit Mercy returns its entire squad from last season, a year in which the Titans went 15-15 and 11-7 in the Horizon League in coach Scott's first season at the helm of the red, white and blue.
