INDIANAPOLIS (5/4/2016) -- Seven University of Detroit Mercy student-athletes received high praise from the Horizon League today as the conferenced announced its Winter All-Academic Team.
Honored by the Horizon League were women's basketball's
Rosanna Reynolds and
Haleigh Ristovski, women's track and field's
Aisha Potts-Tyre and men's track and field's
Colin Cashner,
Ben Kendell,
Khalil Parris and
Austin Wigent.
Both Reynolds and Ristovski earn the honor for the second-straight season, while Wigent took home the accolade in 2014.
Reynolds holds a 3.74 GPA in Accounting as she is part of the five-year MBA program. She was a two-time Horizon League Player of the Week and earned First Team All-Horizon League accolades this season after ranking third in the Horizon League in assists (149), sixth in scoring (15.6 ppg) and second in both free throw percentage (87.2) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.1). A co-captain and three-year starter, Reynolds started all 30 games and scored in double figures 25 times.
Ristovski – a 3.99 GPA student in Accounting – was third in the Horizon League in rebounding (9.1 rpg) and second in defensive boards (8.2) and minutes played per game (35.6). She was also ninth in the NCAA in defensive rebounding. A co-captain, she started all 30 games and led the Titans in blocks (31), rebounds (272) and minutes played (1,069) and was second in assists (93), 3-pointers (43) and steals (31).
Potts-Tyre has a 3.51 GPA in Health Services Administration. Her senior season in indoor track featured a third-place finish in the pentathlon at the HL Championships. She won the pentathlon at the GVSU Bob Eubanks Open and won three titles at the IPFW Duals as she was named Horizon League Field Athlete of the Week on Jan. 26. She also notched career-bests in the shot put (12.56m), 800-meter run (2:36.73) and 60-meter hurdles (8.84) during the season.
Cashner has registered a 3.43 GPA as a graduate student in Mechanical Engineering. He placed third in the weight throw at the Horizon League Indoor Championships and threw a career-best 19.79m at the YSU National Invitational, placing second in the event. Overall, he had four top-three finishes in the weight throw during the indoor season.
The Horizon League Co-Fall Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Kendell has a 3.99 GPA in Electrical Engineering. He posted a pair of top-five finishes at the HL Indoor Championships, taking fourth in both the 3,000 and 5,000 meters. He won the 3,000m twice during the indoor season, breaking the school record in the event at the YSU Invitational with a time of 8:21.33.
Parris holds a 3.38 GPA in Architecture. He was runner-up twice at the HL Indoor Championships, including placing second in the 400-meter dash in 48.26. He was also part of 4x400-meter relay team that placed second at the league event. Parris didn't finish lower than third in any race during the indoor season and recorded a pair of victories.
With a 3.83 GPA as an Accounting major, Wigent recorded two top-12 efforts at the indoor conference championships placing ninth in the 5,000m and 11th in the 3,000m. He was also sixth in the 3,000m and 5,000m at the YSU National Invitational.
The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal Academic All-League Teams in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Academic All-Horizon League consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale) and have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits.
In total, 75 student-athletes from the league were honored for the sports of men's and women's basketball, indoor track and field and swimming and diving.
