VALPARAISO, Ind. (5/8/16) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's track and field squad received big performances from junior
Khalil Parris and its relay teams as the 2016 Horizon League Outdoor Championships came to a close on Sunday afternoon from Valparaiso University.
The Titans finished the championships in fifth place with 66 points. Youngstown State took the title after edging Milwaukee by two points, 183 to 181. Oakland finished in third with 165 points, followed by Valparaiso with 102.
Parris heads home after gold and silver medal performances, earning 18 points for Detroit. Parris took first place in the 400-meter hurdles in 53.64 and then followed with a runner-up effort in the 400-meter dash at 47.39.
Detroit took first place and earned 10 points in the 4x400-meter relay as
Carlton Sims,
Anton Webster,
Zach Arnold and Parris teamed up for a time of 3:15.02. Sims ran the first leg in 50.4, before Webster's 48.6, Sims' 48.8 and Parris' anchor of 47.6.
The Titans added six more points in the 4x100 meter relay after the foursome of junior
Ilia Panev, Sims, Arnold and junior
Brandon Wilks finished with the third best time of 41.80. The time is the second fastest in Detroit program history.
In the 800-meter run, senior
Ryan Hofsess and freshman
Anton Webster each picked up points for Detroit. Hofsess clocked in at 2:00.45, good for third place, while Webster followed in sixth at 2:00.73.
Sophomore
Ben Kendell earned four points for the Titans in the 5,000-meter run, finishing fifth in 14:44.54.
Panev picked up six more points for Detroit in the 110-meter hurdles and added another point in the 400-meter hurdles. The junior finished third in the 110-meter hurdles at 14.88, his season best and just off his personal record, before finishing eighth in the 400-meter hurdles at 1:01.63.
In the hammer throw, freshman
Nick Scalzi led Detroit with a toss of 38.06 meters (124'10"). Senior
Colin Cashner had an uncharacteristic performance and headed home empty handed after fouling on all three of his throws.
Hofsess led the Titans in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:12.11. Sophomore
Max Rogowski followed in 4:17.11 and sophomore
Charlie Felton rounded out the Titans with a time of 4:23.43.
