KENNESAW, Ga. (5/8/2016) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team battled and battled all game long, but the overtime goal by Old Dominion was the difference as the Titans fell, 11-10, in the Atlantic Sun Championship on Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Bank Stadium on the campus of Kennesaw State.
The Titans were appearing in the A-Sun Championship game for the fourth-straight year as the fourth-seeded Detroit squad defeated No. 5 Mercer in the quarterfinals and top-seeded Jacksonville in the semifinals to reach the title match.
Detroit (12-8) and Old Dominion (16-3) traded the lead throughout the entire game, but the Monarchs were able to score three in a row and take a 10-8 advantage with seven minutes left. That spurt was stopped when freshman
Lexie Kinmond added her third goal with 6:44 left as she flew past two defenders and sidearmed one in net as Detroit trailed 10-9. The defense held strong and forced a turnover and Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year
Kaitlyn Wandelt was able to knot it at 10-10 with her fourth of the contest at the 5:11 mark.
The defense then held off Old Dominion down the stretch and had one last shot with a man-up opportunity as regulation was ending, but Detroit Mercy could not get the goal it needed as the game went into the extra session.
Detroit won the draw in overtime as junior
Kelsi Pritchard scooped up the draw control and Detroit had it in ODU's offensive end first. Pritchard was knocked down in the eight-meter circle on a pass but the officials didn't blow a whistle and ODU gained possession. With less than a minute to go in the first overtime before switching sides, the Monarchs were able to get the game winner.
Wandelt led the Titans with a game-high four goals, while freshman Kinmond had three markers. Sophomore
Emma Mucci tallied a game-best five draw controls, while senior Ally Sharder posted a team-high three caused turnovers. Senior
Kylie Birney picked up a game-high five ground balls and
Allison McDonough made nine saves in net as ODU fired 20 of its 24 shots on goal in the contest.
McDonough, Mucci and
Lauren Webley were all named to the A-Sun All-Tournament team.
Both teams had some good offensive looks shots early on, but Detroit was able to get on the board first as Kinmond sliced through a double team and fired one in the net nearly 10 minutes into the contest. Just four minutes later, Kinmond made her defender fall and then beat the goalie again giving the Titans a 2-0 lead.
Old Dominion would go on a 4-0 run to end the half leading 4-2 and then went ahead 5-2 a little more than a minute into the second period. Wandelt ended the ODU surge with a goal as
Brianna Plester found her moving to the net and she ripped one in at the 27:12 mark.
The Titans then scored two goals in a little over a minute, both off the stick of sophomore
Jordyn Beam as she found the back of the net at 25:12 and 24:08. Just 16 seconds later, the Titans netted their fourth in a row as Pritchard was fouled and beat the goalie on a free-position shot, forcing an ODU timeout. With Mucci winning another draw control, the red, white and blue offensive output continued as nearly 20 seconds after the last marker, Wandelt was able to control the ball and explode down the field firing one down low and into the net for a 7-5 advantage with 23:35 remaining.
The Monarchs were able to tie the game at 7-7, but Detroit Mercy's defense was able to force a turnover and Wandelt took advantage getting inside the arc untouched before putting one in for an 8-7 lead with 15 minutes on the clock.
Old Dominion would recover though and score three in a row to take the lead before the final Titan comeback attempt.
Detroit outshot ODU, 27-23, and also had more ground balls (22-19) and draw controls (13-9). The Titans were also 13-of-14 on clears and caused seven turnovers, while overall forcing the Monarchs into 11 in the game. The defense was also stout on Old Dominion's free-position as the Monarchs were just 1-of-6.
Wandelt added three draw controls and four ground balls. Webley had two caused turnovers and Kinmond scooped up three GB's.
Detroit ended the season at 12-8 overall – a new school wins record for the second-straight season - and the win over top-seeded Jacksonville was historic as the Dolphins had won the Atlantic Sun Championship the last three years and had never lost a conference game in the four-year history of A-Sun women's lacrosse.
The Titans also had their second-straight winning season and won two games at the conference tournament for the second-straight year. Detroit's senior class of
Kylie Birney,
Morgan Miller,
Michaela Schwartz and
Ally Shrader earned 32 wins across their four seasons, reaching the A-Sun Championship game ever single season.
Wandelt finished the season with 64 goals and 75 points, which both rank third all-time for a single-season. She also surpassed the 70-draw control plateau on Sunday, setting a new school record in the category.
