DETROIT (7/8/2016) -- From July 4-15, DetroitTitans.com will release the Top 10 Moments of 2015-16 as voted on by members of the Detroit Mercy athletic staff. Each day, a new moment will be posted on DetroitTitans.com as well as on all the Titan social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter).
At No. 6 are back-to-back come-from-behind victories on the road for the Titan women's basketball team as the red, white and blue proved they can win against all odds.
While still in a fight for one of the top seeds in the Horizon League Championship, the Titans embarked on a three-game road trip to Northern Kentucky, Wright State and Metro Series-rival Oakland. The first game didn't go as planned falling to the Norse and that set up a must win at high-scoring Wright State.
Already playing with an eight-man roster, the Titans battled the Raiders in a contest that featured nine lead changes only to see WSU take a nine-point lead in the middle of the third quarter. Detroit would storm back and take the lead in the fourth, but then its roster would start to dwindle away with three players in starters
Haleigh Ristovski and
Chea Taylor along with the eventual HL Sixth Player of the Year
Brianne Cohen all fouling out in the period, leaving the Titans with just five players as the game went into overtime.
Not only were the Titans down to five players, but three were also freshmen in a hostile environment, and another starter in First Team All-Horizon League guard
Rosanna Reynolds was playing with four fouls. With all of that against them, the Titans were able to hold off Wright State with some tough late defense, crashing the glass for timely offensive rebounds and sinking free throws for a 95-93 victory.
It did not get any easier as a week later – and this time down to a seven-man roster due to injuries - Detroit Mercy saw itself down by as many as 12 points at rival Oakland, only to erase that and send the contest into another extra session. Cohen was able to net the game-tying layup with 27 seconds left in regulation and in overtime, she had four points in a key 6-0 run that saw the Titans open a 76-70 lead with 1:07 left. The Ristovski sisters then sealed the win combining to go 6-for-6 down the stretch at the free throw line and Haleigh recorded a huge block on Oakland star Elena Popkey with 17 seconds left as the Titans won, 82-77.
