Veterans Lead The Way For Titans In Season Opener

DETROIT (9/2/2016) -- Three Titans claimed top 10 spots and a few career records were broken as the University of Detroit Mercy women's cross country team opened the 2016 campaign at the Golden Grizzly Open on Friday.

The Titans finished in second place with 49 points in the 4k event, held on the campus of Metro Series rival Oakland.

Detroit Mercy will be back in action next Saturday, Sept. 10, when the program host the 30th Annual Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational at Cass Benton Park in Northville. The day will begin at 9:30 a.m., with the open races. The collegiate races are slated to start at 11:15. For more information, click here.

Here is how the action went down at the Golden Grizzly Open:
  • The Titans had three runners in the top 10 and five runners in the top 20.
  • Devon Sutton earned her third career top-10 finish taking fifth in 14:32. It was her highest collegiate finish besting the sixth place mark she had as a freshman at the Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational.
  • Sutton also clocked a personal best 14:32 time in the 4k, a PR by 1:05 that she had at the 2014 Golden Grizzly Open (15:37)
  • Junior Sydnie Fetherolf nearly had a PR posting a time of 15:00, just five seconds shy of her career time. With her eighth-place finish, she now has five career top-10 marks with two of those coming at the Golden Grizzly Open.
  • Junior Jenny Ponkowski recorded her first career top-10 finish by taking 10th in 15:11. Ponkowski's time was also a PR by 32 seconds off her run at Oakland in 2014.
  • Junior Taylor Smith crossed the finish line in 16:01 for 15th, her fourth career top-20 run and just missing a PR by seven seconds.
  • Freshman Victoria Ostrander made her collegiate debut and was 20th in 16:36.
  • The Titans also had three other runners make their collegiate debut in sophomore Annmarie Taylor and freshmen Kayla Hughes and Alexis Kearney
  • Former Titan and All-Horizon League standout Louisa Coppola '14 was at the meet as a coach for Macomb Community College.
