Titans Battle in #MetroSeries Loss to Oakland

DETROIT (9/21/2016) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team battled its rival Oakland and outshot the visiting Golden Grizzlies in the match, but the Titans fell 2-1 in the first #MetroSeries meeting between the two schools in 2016. The game was played Wednesday afternoon in front of 347 fans at Titan Field.

It didn't take long for the Titans to score in Wednesday's match. Senior Tommy Bowman found the back of the net for the second-straight game, striking a ball through traffic from the top of the box to the left side of the goal in the sixth minute. Bowman's third career marker gave the Titans an early 1-0 lead.

The Titans bolted out of the gates as Adam Clauss had a shot in the first 20 seconds of the match, while Detroit Mercy earned four corner kicks in the opening 11 minutes. Detroit Mercy kept its' foot on the gas pedal in the opening 45 minutes. Junior Matt DeVries pushed a header just wide in the 22nd minute and junior Spiro Pliakos had a couple of good looks in the first half.

Oakland scored both of its goals in the second half, finding the back of the net in the 53rd minute and again in the 80th minute off a corner kick.

The Titans had a flurry of looks towards the end of the match with Bowman getting two shots off a free kick opportunity just outside of the box in the 77th minute. Junior Ryan Ruloff also had a good chance just minutes later, pushing his shot just high of the goal in the 81st minute.

Detroit Mercy finished the contest by leading Oakland in both shots (13-11) and corner kicks (7-5). Both sides had two saves, while one yellow card was issued to each squad.

Bowman totaled four shots and Pliakos had three in the contest.

Detroit Mercy returns to the pitch Saturday afternoon visiting Western Michigan in Kalamazoo for a noon tilt. The Titans don't return home again until Tuesday, Oct. 4, hosting Fort Wayne at 3 p.m.
