DETROIT (9/6/2016) -- Men's lacrosse will begin fall practice in less than two weeks, but a few Titans are coming off a great summer season in Canada.
Junior
Lucas Ducharme and sophomore transfer
Matthew Vangalen had the biggest offensive seasons as members of the Orangeville Northmen of the Ontario Junior A Lacrosse League. The Titan duo helped Orangeville place second in the regular season at 14-5-1 and winning the OJALL postseason tournament. The conference title sealed the team's bid to the prestigious Minto Cup, awarded annually to the champion junior men's lacrosse team of Canada. The Northmen made it all the way to the finals dropping the best of five series, 3-2, including a 6-5 overtime loss in game five.
During the regular season, Vangalen finished third on the team with 49 points, fourth with 21 goals and tied for fourth with 28 assists. He missed most of the postseason, but played very strong in the Minto Cup posting three goals and three assists for six points. His acrobatic marker with just over a minute left tied the pivotal game five at 5-5 and that was after he had three assists and a marker in game four.
Meanwhile, Ducharme ended the regular season third on the team with 22 goals, fourth with 46 points and sixth picking up 24 assists. In the playoffs, he tallied 28 points on 14 goals and 14 assists in just 12 games and recorded seven points in the Minto Cup on three goals and four helpers.
Junior
Pat Masterson suited up for the Kitchener-Waterloo Braves of the OJALL and helped the team to nine victories. During the regular season, he collected 10 assists to go with one goal.
Sophomore
Patrick Walsh played for the Burlington Chiefs and helped the team claim fifth in the regular season with an 11-8-1 mark. During the season, he posted 14 points on 10 assists and four goals.
Sophomore
Evan Mihalic played in the Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League with the Windsor Clippers. The team won a Far West title going 16-4 during the regular campaign and reached the Western Conference finals. On the year, he netted a goal from his defensive position.
In the Major Series Lacrosse league, the Titans had three alums on the senior circuit in
Shayne Adams,
Jordan Houtby and
Joel Matthews.
Adams played with the COBOURG Kodiaks and was fourth on the team with 27 points, including tying for second handing out 20 assists while notching seven goals.
Houtby started the year with the Brooklin Redmen before being traded and ending the year with the Brampton Excelsiors. As a defender, he did not collect any statistics in nine games.
Matthews was part of the Peterborough Lakers, helping the program win the regular season with a 14-3-1 record and reach the league championship.
On the year, he tallied 13 points on 10 assists and three goals and had another three goals and four assists in the playoffs.
The ninth year of Titan lacrosse is set for 2017 as the team will commence the season with fall practice in September.
