LOUISVILLE (1/28/17) – A pair of seniors led the University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team in a 5-2 setback on the road at the University of Louisville, with
Anna Davydova and
Nynke Van Der Goot posting wins in singles.
Playing from the top line, Davydova took the match in straight sets over the Cardinals' Sena Suswam. Davydova won the opening set, 6-4, before backing it up with a 6-3 win in the second.
Van Der Goot's path wasn't as easy, with the senior earning a hard-fought win in three sets. Van Der Goot bounced back from a 6-1 loss in the first frame to take the second with a 6-4 win that knotted the match at 1-1. Van Der Goot outlasted Ariana Rodriguez in the third, 11-9, to close out the victory.
Sophomore
Iris Thioux put up a fight from the fourth position, but fell 6-3 and 7-5. Newcomer
Ksenia Providokhina followed a similar path after suffering a pair of 6-3 defeats.
The Cardinals earned the doubles point after taking all three decisions.
The Titans return to the Motor City for a pair of matches from Franklin Athletic Club next weekend. Detroit Mercy hosts Toledo on Friday night (7 p.m.) and Northwestern Ohio on Sunday night (6 p.m.).
