Titans Tough Out A Win Over Defending HL Champion Green Bay

DETROIT (1/29/2017) -- Junior DeShawndre Black tallied the game winning three-point play and the Titan defense was able to keep Green Bay off the scoreboard in the final seconds as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team came-from-behind to down the Phoenix, 93-92, on Sunday in historic Calihan Hall.

Junior Jaleel Hogan tallied a game-high 28 points in just 29 minutes of action going 8-of-14 from the field and 12-of-17 at the free throw line.

The HL leading freshmen scorer Corey Allen posted 20 points with three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Black ended the game with a season-high 15 points, game-high seven assists and a season-best five boards and sophomore Josh McFolley recorded 17 points and a career-high five steals.

Green Bay  (13-9, 7-3 HL) – the defending Horizon League champions – came into the game in second place in the HL and led for over 35 minutes total compared to 2:10 the Titans were in front.

Green Bay led by as many as 10 points in the first half and was up by 10 early in the second and again at 81-71 with 8:40 left. That is when Detroit Mercy (5-17, 3-7 HL) put together an 8-1 run to make it a one-possession game. The Titan defense forced a couple of turnovers and back-to-back dunks by McFolley and then a layup from senior Jarod Williams made it 81-77. After a Phoenix basket, sophomore Gerald Blackshear Jr., corralled an offensive rebound and tipped it in to get the red, white and blue within three at 82-79.

The Phoenix was able to hold off that charge and run its score up to six, 88-82, with 3:50 on the clock, but back came the Titans as Black hit a jumper and Allen buried a three to make it a one-point contest, 88-87.

The Titans would then find themselves down by five, 92-87, at the 1:46 mark, when McFolley hit two free throws and Allen split a pair to make it a 92-90 deficit with 36 seconds remaining.

Green Bay then went to the line, but missed both free throws and the Titans claimed the rebound and called a timeout with 28 seconds on the scoreboard. When play resumed, the ball would end up in Black's hands as he drove to the rim and was fouled while knocking in his shot. He then hit the free throw for the and-one and scored his career high 15th point and the Titans were ahead 93-92.

The Phoenix had one final attempt at a game winner, but its shot rimmed out and senior Patrick Robinson Jr. pulled down the rebound for the win.

Williams tallied six points and two rebounds, while Blackshear Jr. had four points and four caroms. Robinson Jr. scored three points and grabbed two rebounds, both in the last minute of play.

The Titans shot a season-high 52.5 percent (31-of-59), including 60.7 percent in the second half. They also connected on nine three pointers and were 22-of-35 at the line. The defense forced Green Bay into 21 turnovers and the Titans had 24 points off those miscues.

The first half saw Hogan keep the Titans in the game scoring 15 points as Detroit Mercy trailed by 10 at one point, but just five at the break, 50-45. Allen had 12 points in the first 20 minutes and Detroit Mercy knocked down seven of its nine 3-pointers in the opening frame.

The red, white and blue will now head back to Ohio for two games starting with Cleveland State on Thursday, Feb. 2.
