DETROIT (10/1/2017) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball program officially began preparation for the 2017-18 season with its first day of practice on Sunday, Oct. 1 from Calihan Hall. Detroit Mercy enters its third season under head coach
Bernard Scott and 41st season as a program.
The Titans are coming off a season in which they went to the Horizon League Championship game and went 12-6 in Horizon League play. The Titans were 18-14 overall last season. Detroit Mercy has two consecutive winning campaigns under coach Scott and his staff.
Detroit Mercy brings back many instrumental pieces from last season's squad including All-Horizon League senior forward
Brianne Cohen as well as senior guard
Nicole Urbanick, one of the top 3-point shooters in the conference in each of the past two seasons.
Also back is a strong group of juniors in
Brittney Jackson,
Taylor Malone,
Lola Ristovski,
Gracie Roberts and
Cortney Williams. Roberts started the final 24 contests at point guard for the Titans last year, while Jackson played in all 32 games last year and was a key contributor off the bench for the Titans. Ristovski played in 30 contests a year ago, while Williams saw time in 28 games for the Titans last season.
A trio of sophomores begin their second year in
Anja Marinkovic,
Ashley Miller and
Zoey Oatis. Marinkovic was one of the five Horizon League All-Freshman Team members in 2016-17 after ranking second on the team with 48 3-pointers, while scoring in double figures 11 times. Miller (27 games) and Oatis (12 games) should see increased roles in their sophomore campaigns for the Titans.
Freshmen
Kayla Brown,
Lexey Tobel and
Aiora Rivas Preciado all enter their first seasons as Titans and should have impactful roles entering 2017-18.
The red, white and blue open the 2017-18 season on the road on Nov. 10 at Miami (Ohio) and play its their first game from Calihan Hall on Nov. 13, hosting Bowling Green State University for the annual Field Trip Day game.
The Titans and the University will be celebrating the 65th anniversary of Calihan Hall all season long. Stay tuned to DetroitTitans.com and
