DETROIT (2/10/2017) -- Junior forward
Jaleel Hogan and sophomore guard
Josh McFolley each tallied the sixth 20-point scoring efforts of their Titan careers Friday night, but the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team fell to Oakland, 89-80, at Calihan Hall in front of 6,275 fans.
Hogan just missed a double-double with 23 points, nine rebounds and three assists, while McFolley hit four of Detroit Mercy's 10 3-pointers and tallied 21 points for the Titans (6-19, 4-9 Horizon League). Freshman guard
Corey Allen added four triples and scored 16 points for the Titans.
Detroit Mercy out-scored Oakland in the second half of the game, 46-37, but trailed by 18 points at halftime and was unable to make up the difference in the second half of the loss. The Titans shot 43.1 percent in the contest, while Oakland finished the game with a 53.6 percent shooting percentage.
The Titans honored the 1976-77 Titans team for a 40-year reunion prior to the game, retiring Terry Duerod's jersey before the game with most of the team and staff returning. The coach of that team, Dick Vitale, was in attendance, sitting alongside the court named after him, along with several other Titan legends.
Detroit Mercy trailed early with Oakland building a double-digit advantage by the 9-minute mark of the first half. Oakland would increase that lead to 18 points, 32-14, with 6:24 left in the first half. Gerald Blackshear Jr. and McFolley would follow with a jumper and 3-pointer, respectively, but OU would again up the lead to 18 points, 52-34, at the halftime break.
Josh McFolley's triple from the corner with 8:22 left cut the Oakland lead that had once been 20 points midway through the second half down to 11 points, 74-63. Detroit Mercy would trade OU with several baskets in the next four minutes of the game, however the Golden Grizzlies kept converting on the offensive end to pull away for the victory.
Detroit Mercy would get to within eight points, 88-80, with 39 seconds left after McFolley converted on all three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point shot. It would prove to be too little, too late, however, for the Titans.
The Titans opened the second half on a 5-0 run with Blackshear sinking a jumper from the free throw line, McFolley converting on a free throw and Hogan also making a jumper. The run pulled the Titans to within 13 points, 52-39, just 1:58 into the second half. Oakland would go ahead and take a 20-point lead with 14:01 remaining. Detroit Mercy was unable to get within 10 points until just 39 seconds left.
Patrick Robinson Jr. was another bright spot for the Titans, tying his career-high with 10 points on 3-of-7 shooting, hitting two 3-pointers. Blackshear made all four of his shots and scored eight points for the red, white and blue.
Oakland finished the game 23-of-30 from the free throw stripe, while Detroit Mercy made 14-of-18. The Titans had 36 rebounds to the Golden Grizzlies' 31 boards.
