INDIANAPOLIS (2/6/2017) -- For the second time this season, University of Detroit Mercy freshman
Anja Marinkovic (Toronto, Ont.) has been selected as the Horizon League Freshman of the Week, which was announced by the league office Monday afternoon.
Marinkovic helped Detroit Mercy to a 2-0 record last week with the Titans earning victories over Milwaukee and No. 21/24-ranked Green Bay from Calihan Hall. The Toronto, Ont. native shot 75.0 percent last week, averaging 13.5 points and sinking 7-of-8 shots from 3-point range.
She scored 16 points in a 77-63 victory over Milwaukee on Thursday, making 4-of-5 shots from downtown and 5-of-7 shots overall. In Detroit Mercy's 76-72 triumph over Green Bay, she was part of a 3-point barrage, going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc and finishing with 11 points total. Detroit Mercy tied a school-record with 16, 3-pointers in the win over Green Bay, the sixth victory ever over a ranked opponent in program history.
Marinkovic was also named the HL Freshman of the Week on Dec. 5 following a 29-point performance at Minnesota. On the season, Marinkovic ranks second on the Titans with 37 triples and has eight double-digit scoring performances. She is averaging 8.1 points per game and is shooting 89.5 percent from the free throw line in 23 contests.
With the two wins last week, Detroit Mercy improved to 9-3 in the Horizon League and 7-0 in league home contests. Detroit Mercy closes out a three-game homestand this weekend, welcoming #MetroSeries rival Oakland to Calihan Hall for a 1 p.m. contest on Saturday.
