Men's Lacrosse

Red, White & Blue Visit The Air Force On Saturday

DETROIT (3/9/2017) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team will play its fourth-straight game away from the Motor City as the Titans fly to take on the Air Force Academy on Saturday, March 10, in the team's final non-conference game before MAAC play opens up next week.

Game time is set for 2 p.m., (EST) at Falcon Stadium in Colorado Springs, Colorado. There will be a live stream and live stats for the contest.

Detroit Mercy is coming off a weekend split at the Midwest Classic as the Titans defeated Bellarmine, 13-10, before getting edged at Marquette, 8-6.

Air Force is the third team on the schedule that the Titans will play that has been ranked or receiving votes in the poll after playing at RV/No. 17 Ohio State and RV/RV Marquette.

The Titans also announced that next week's game against Manhattan at Titan Field has been moved to 11 a.m.

ABOUT AIR FORCE
Air Force comes into the game at 3-3 on the season with wins over nationally-ranked Duke (11-10), Canisius (15-10) and Cleveland State (16-2), but the Falcons have dropped games against top-ranked Denver (14-6), Marist (10-4) and Boston University (8-6).

Chris Walsch leads the team with 19 points on 12 goals and a team-high seven assists, while Nick Hruby has 18 points with a team-best 14 goals.

Trent Harper has won 40-of-68 (58.5%) faceoffs with a team-high 26 ground balls and Paxton Boyer has started every game in net and has posted an 8.51 goals against average.

Last season, Air Force put together one of its best years in school history going 15-3 - which included a 15-game winning streak - and winning the SoCon regular season and conference tournament titles, advancing to the NCAA Tournament.

ALL-TIME VS. AIR FORCE
This is the second-straight year that the Titans will face Air Force as the Falcons visited Titan Field last year, becoming the first-ever ranked team the red, white and blue has ever hosted.

Air Force has won all three previous meetings with the first two coming in the state of Colorado.

Air Force was one of the original teams on the Titans' inaugural 2009 schedule in the program's first year of lacrosse.

AGAINST THE SOCON
The Titans are 13-18 all-time against current teams from the Southern Conference, including 4-1 versus VMI, 4-2 against Mercer, 2-2 against Jacksonville, 0-3 versus Air Force and 2-7 against Bellarmine.

Detroit Mercy has already played three SoCon opponents on the year in Bellarmine, Mercer and Jacksonville, winning two of those games with a close setback to Mercer.

RECORD WATCH
Senior goalie Jason Weber now has 589 career saves and is just 20 away from the school record of 609 held by A.J. Levell '13.

He recorded a school-record 202 as a sophomore and also owns the second place mark with 179 as a freshman.

He is also fifth in school history with 134 ground balls.

THE GREAT WALL OF WEBER
Senior Jason Weber has now recorded double-digit saves in 37 of his 44 career games, including 17 with 15+, 11 with 17 or more and two with 20 or more.

In 44 career games – 43 starts – he has posted 589 saves, a .575 save percentage - second in school history - and a school record 10.11 goals against average.

In the season opener, he made 11 saves at RV/#17 Ohio State and posted a season-best 16 at Mercer. Just last week, he had 12 on the road at RV/RV Marquette.

He is a two-time All-MAAC honoree who was the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year as a freshman.

As a sophomore, he topped the country for the second-straight year with 14.43 saves per game last season, while finishing third in the nation - and second in the MAAC - with a .589 save percentage, while as a rookie, he led the nation with a pair of school records finishing with 16.27 saves per game and a .642 save percentage.

MENDELL HONORED BY THE MAAC
After going off for six goals in the Midwest Classic win over Bellarmine, Detroit Mercy freshman Seth Mendell was named the MAAC Freshman of the Week on Monday, March 6.

Mendell took only six shots and they were all on goal and in the net as he posted six markers, tying for the second most in school history against the Knights.

He had a hat trick by halftime and didn't stop his offensive charge coming up with a goal in the third and two key ones in the fourth to help the Titans register the victory.

In the next game at Marquette, he added an assist and also totaled three ground balls and a caused turnover in the weekend action.

ALREADY IN THE RECORD BOOKS
Freshman Seth Mendell recorded his first collegiate hat trick in a big way as he exploded for six goals in the win over Bellarmine.

The six goals are tied for the second-most in school history and the most since Shayne Adams had six at Marist in 2014.

VANTASTIC
Sophomore transfer Matthew Vangalen has had a great start to his Titan career and is currently on pace to set a school record for points.

He currently has 27 points through seven games and at his current pace of 3.85 points per game, he would total roughly 55 points on the year, breaking the school mark of 49 (42g, 7a) held by Shayne Adams in 2014.

In his first ever game wearing the red, white and blue, Vangalen posted two goals and three assists at RV/#17 Ohio State, the most ever by a Titan in their debut and the most ever by a Titan in a season opener.

At Robert Morris, he registered four assists to tie a school record that was held by current Director of Operations Alex Maini '15 (at VMI, Mar. 1, 2014) and Joel Matthews (at Quinnipiac, Mar 10, 2012).

Just last week against Bellarmine, he tallied his second hat trick on the year with three goals and two assists against the Knights.

LEADING THE OFFENSE
Sophomore Matthew Vangalen currently leads the team with 27 points on 12 goals and 15 assists.

His 27 points and 15 assists are second in the MAAC, while his 15 goals is tied for sixth.

He is already tied for sixth in school history with 15 assists on the season and is just two away from moving into fourth place in that category.

The leader in single-season assists is Alex Maini, who recorded 26 in 2014.

DON'T MESS WITH TEX
Junior Will Kane - who hails from Dallas, Texas - had a good weekend last week at the Midwest Classic totaling four caused turnovers and four ground balls.

Kane tied his career high with three ground balls against Bellarmine and then posted a career-best three caused turnovers at Marquette.

He currently leads the team with eight caused turnovers - a new career high and the most in the MAAC - and leads all defenseman with 11 GB's.

KEEP SHOOTING
Detroit Mercy tallied 46 shots against Jacksonville and also picked up 35 ground balls at Robert Morris.

The 46 shots were the most since recording 58 against Manhattan in 2015, while the 35 ground balls are the most since tallying 35 at Quinnipiac in 2015.

ON THE RISE
Detroit Mercy has netted double-digit goals three times this season after not accomplishing that at all last year.

Detroit Mercy also tallied a season-high 13 goals last week in the win over Bellarmine, the most goals since posting 14 at Siena in 2015.

TAKING ADVANTAGE
Detroit Mercy currently leads the MAAC with 12 man-up goals on the year.

The Titans have a great history with the extra-man attack as they set a NCAA record with a .708 mark in 2014, converting on 34-of-48 opportunities.

FIRST SCORES
The Titans have had a few guys come away with their first collegiate goals on the season.

Freshman Donavon Dempsey had a goal against Michigan for his first marker.

Freshman Seth Mendell recorded his first collegiate points with two assists against Michigan and posted his first goal against Mercer.

Junior Adam Findlay and sophomore Emmett Green both fired in goals versus Michigan and Jacksonville for their first scores.

Last week at the Midwest Classic, junior Pat Masterson in transition from his LSM position was able to beat the goalie for a marker at Marquette on just his second career shot.

GJOKAJ TIES HIS MARK
Senior Ben Gjokaj tied his career high with 15 faceoff wins and picked up a career-best 10 ground balls at RV/#17 Ohio State in the season opener.

The 10 GB's are tied for the second-most in school history and are the most since Jordan Houtby had 10 against Michigan in 2012, while his 15 faceoff wins were just one behind the school record of 16 recorded twice by Brandon Davenport against Robert Morris in 2010 and 2011.

He is now 43-of-94 (45.7%) on the season with 21 ground balls.

He tied his mark that he set going 15-of-22 on faceoffs against Quinnipiac last year.

Last season, he saw action in 11 games as the Titans' main faceoff specialist and led the league and was 24th in the nation in faceoff winning percentage with a career-high and school record 56.6 percent (74-of-133), which included an astounding 68-of-108 (62.9%) mark in MAAC play.

BIRNEY BITS
Junior Sean Birney has already surpassed his career best with 10 goals this season.

He scored seven goals as both a freshman and sophomore and is now tied for third on the team with 11 points and second with 10 goals.

DEFENSIVE EDGE
Freshman Alex Akins led the defense at Robert Morris with a pair of caused turnovers, while juniors Charlie Hayes and Pat Masterson tallied a caused turnover and five ground balls, a new career best for Hayes.

Hayes is currently second on the team with five caused turnovers, while senior goalie Jason Weber and Akins have four apiece.

ALEX THE GREAT
Freshman Alex Jarzembowski won a season-best 14-of-21 faceoffs and scooped up a game-high seven ground balls at Robert Morris.

He had another fine outing winning 12-of-18 against Bellarmine with five ground balls.

In his first three games, he was just 3-of-8 with two ground balls, but in the last three, he is 29-of-46 (63.0%) with 13 GB's.

BO JUST ONE AWAY
Senior Kyle Beauregard has had a great start to his final collegiate campaign as he is tied for third on the team with 11 points and tied for fourth with eight goals.

His 11 points on the season tied his career high he set as a sophomore, while his eight goals is one shy of the nine he had in 2015.

1, 2, 3
Senior Kyle Beauregard recorded his third career hat trick with three goals in a winning effort against Jacksonville on Feb. 26.

His other two came with three at Monmouth last year and against Robert Morris in 2015 - where he had the game winner in overtime.

LOOKING FOR MORE
Junior Alec Gilhooly is already approaching his career high of 18 points last year as he has eight goals and three assists.

Gilhooly has notched two goals in a game three times this season firing in a pair at RV/#17 Ohio State, against Mercer and against Jacksonville.
