SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (4/16/17) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team earned a 4-3 win over Northern Kentucky on Sunday afternoon in Horizon League action from Franklin Athletic Club.
Prior to the match, seniors
Anna Davydova and
Nynke Van Der Goot were honored for their contributions to the women's tennis program.
The senior duo kicked off doubles with a dominating 6-0 win at No. 2 and rookies
Ksenia Providokhina and
Pauline Van Herck clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win from No. 3.
Detroit Mercy had to sweat out singles as NKU put together a fierce rally, but the Titans picked up three wins to emerge with the 4-3 victory.
Sophomore
Iris Thioux picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles and Van Der Goot and Van Herck each recorded three-set victories.
Van Der Goot won the opening set at No. 4 singles, 6-3, before falling in the second, 6-1. The senior bounced back with a 6-4 win in the third.
Van Herck dropped the opening set, 6-1, but answered with 6-4 wins in the second and third to pick up the win.
Freshman
Marie Maitrot played well from the second position of singles. Maitrot fell in the opening set, 6-1, but forced a third frame with a 6-3 win in the second. The rookie fell in a hard-fought final set after the match went to a tiebreaker, 7-6 (8-5).
The Titans improve to 8-10 overall and 4-2 in league play with the victory.
Detroit Mercy will look to keep the momentum going with a showdown at Metro Series Rival Oakland on Wednesday, Apr. 19.
