ANN ARBOR, Mich. (4/28/17) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team defeated rival Oakland University, 4-1, in the quarterfinals of the Horizon League Tournament on Friday afternoon from the University of Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center.
The Titans opened the match by taking the doubles point and took three of the first four singles points to clinch the win and advance to the semifinals, where No. 1 Youngstown State waits for a 3 p.m. showdown on Saturday afternoon.
In doubles, the Titans picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to secure the point. Freshman
Marie Maitrot and sophomore
Iris Thioux won 6-3 from the top line, with freshman
Ksenia Providokhina and sophomore
Pauline Van Herck coming through for a 6-4 win from the third position.
Oakland took the first singles match, but Detroit Mercy slammed the door as Van Herck won 6-0 and 7-5 at No. 5, Providokhina won 6-0 and 6-3 from No. 6, and Thioux took No. 3 with a pair of 6-4 wins.
The final two matches of the day went unfinished, with senior
Anna Davydova leading in the second set of No. 1 and Maitrot in a tiebreaking third set at No. 2.
With the win, Detroit Mercy improves to 11-11 on the season and advances to the semifinals of the Horizon League Championships to take on No. 1 Youngstown State. The match is set to begin at 3 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN3.
