DETROIT (4/10/2017) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball program and head coach
Bernard Scott held its annual team banquet Friday night from Pasquale's in Royal Oak. The 2016-17 Titan squad, coaches, staff members, family, friends and supporters were on hand to celebrate the recent season.
Coach Scott and the Titans handed out the awards for the team along with honoring the three seniors --
Kelsey Mitchell,
Rosanna Reynolds and
Haleigh Ristovski -- on the 2016-17 squad.
Senior guard
Rosanna Reynolds (Canton, Mich. / Divine Child) was named the Team MVP. The First Team All-Conference player capped off one of the best careers in Titan history during the past season, breaking the career mark in assists (552) and career starts (129), while also reaching No. 3 in career scoring (1,745 points).
Reynolds became the first player in school history with 1,500 points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists and led the team in scoring during the season at 16.2 points per game. She ranked second in the Horizon League in assists, leading the Titans at 4.9 assists per game. She led the team with 46 steals and had two, 30-point games during the season and the top-two, single-game assist totals (12, 11) in the league during the 2016-17 season. Reynolds became just the second player in school history to earn three All-Conference awards.
Senior guard/forward
Haleigh Ristovski (Sterling Heights, Mich. / University Liggett) earned the team's Academic Award as well as the Coaches Award. Ristovski, who has a 3.99 GPA in Accounting, earned the Academic Award for having the top GPA on the team. Ristovski earned Horizon League All-Academic Team honors for the third-straight season and received several academic accolades at the recent Honors Convocation at the University.
On the court, Ristovski was a force again for the Titans, starting all 32 games and leading the team in rebounding (8.1 per game). She finished her career No. 3 all-time in rebounding (869) and ranked sixth in the NCAA in defensive rebounding this season. She was the first Titan to record 800 points, 800 rebounds and 300 assists in a career.
Graduate forward
Kelsey Mitchell (Detroit, Mich. / Inkster) was named the team's Sixth Player of the Year. Mitchell, in her lone season with the Titans, played in 31 games, all but two of them off the bench. She ranked fifth on the squad in scoring at 7.1 points per game and second in rebounds at 5.7 boards per contest. She recorded a career-best 16 rebounds in a double-double at Bradley and had a career-high five blocks in a win at Oakland. She finished the year tied for second on the Titans with 27 blocks.
Junior forward
Brianne Cohen (Toronto, Ont. / York Memorial) received the Defensive MVP award. Cohen, who was Second Team All-Horizon League during the season, led the squad with 29 blocks. She ranked second on the squad at 15.2 points per game, while ranking first in the league and 12th in the NCAA in field goal percentage (60.1). She had eight games of multiple blocks, totaling a career-high four vs. Valparaiso on Dec. 29.
Sophomore guard
Brittney Jackson (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Nazareth) earned the squad's Most Improved honor after showing improvement on and off the court for the Titans during the 2016-17 season. Jackson played in all 32 games for the Titans, finishing fifth on the squad with 30, 3-pointers and fourth on the team with 50 assists. She shot 32 percent from long range during the season and has played in all 62 games in her career.
Also receiving their Horizon League All-Freshman Team honor was
Anja Marinkovic (Toronto, Ont. / Northern Secondary School), who was the seventh Titan in the past eight years to earn a spot on the All-Freshman Team. Marinkovic was second among HL freshmen in scoring (7.5 ppg) and was second on the team with 48 treys.
